timrockotwo new self storage facilities going up on East Main....Really, how many does Allen really need...they dont look very pleasant......
LauraWAnd I believe there's one being built at Stacy and Angel Pkwy.
yo-yo-yoYes there is one being built at Stacy & Angel, there was a big protest against this one and all the surrounding neighborhoods went to the city council and had several meetings over this and it never did any good. There has also been several posts on this topic before and everyone agrees there is no need for more storage,it is really silly and unattractive to have this many storage facilities in one town! Not to mention it promotes theft, storage buildings are always being broken into and then it gives the thief a chance to check the surrounding neighborhoods!

txbeeguyI think it's the basic law or supply and demand. There obviously must be a demand for them or there wouldn't be a supply. (Besides our city counsel members know best$
civicmindedHmmm, well more storage is needed of course. When one considers we have (want?) too much stuff, or the smaller size garages of today, or Businesses "running" out of these units, or illegal purposes......I think they will continue. It's not an Allen only deal of course
vrsAs the town grows, the need for all manner of services grows proportionately - including self-storage.

People who patronize self storage in Allen are the same people who buy groceries here, go to school and church here, get their clothes cleaned here, fill the bleachers at little league ballgames here, etc. etc. etc.

(These are also the exact same people who would buy wine at the grocery store or hop on the train for downtown if Allen were wet or participated in DART.) But, I digress.

I just kept two storage units for a number of months while I was "between houses." I like to think I am more of a net contributor than a net detractor to the community.

txbeeguy is absolutely correct that supply and demand dictates how many of what sort of establishment investors request to open in Allen. Then Planning & Zoning decides whether or not it is the best highest use of a piece of property to allow that construction and makes appropriate recommendation to Council.

I may disagree with Council here and there on a decision, but I believe they do a terrific job - by and large - and I am willing to defer most all of my disagreements with them to their better view of the big picture.
