[This message has been edited by denisew (edited November 27, 2002).]denisew For any of you who are worried about their plants freezing tonight - and especially tomorrow night since we are supposed to get a hard freeze in the mid-20's, get out the sheets and blankets to cover them. Don't use plastic because you will run the risk of cooking your plants if you forget to remove the plastic the next day. I only put burlap and sheets over my lettuce just in case - even though it is a cool weather crop, it might not make the hard freeze Wednesday night. I plan on picking most of it Wednesday to use for Thanksgiving. The rest of my garden will be all right and will return next spring. LauraW Denise, Do I need to protect my pansies in my flowerbed? denisew Your pansies should be fine. They might get nipped, but the flowers will return. I plant pansies every year and they make it through to the spring with flying colors. They like the cool weather and can withstand some freezing temperatures. The only time a hardy plant may be in danger of freeze damage is if the soil around the roots is dry. When the weather is cool, the soil can still dry out, so be sure to water every 2-3 weeks if there is no rain to protect your plants. denisew Well, some of my more tender plants got a little nipped with this freeze, but the pansies are just fine and so is my lettuce in my veggie garden, so I should be able to harvest fresh lettuce for a while longer. denisew I just wanted to bring this to the top again to let people know that tomorrow night - Thursday, it is supposed to get down to the low 20's, so if you have any plants that are tender, either bring them in (garage is fine) if they are in pots or cover them if you want them to survive. Don't worry about your holly bushes, nandinas and other hardy plants. They should be fine. In other words, no need to cover your entire landscape.
