boredgirl75002Does anyone know what type of grass is best if you have 2 large dogs? I have several areas in my yard that are nothing but mud because they wore the grass away. I am sure I will need some type of top layer before the grass also but don't know for sure.
denisewCommon Bermuda grass is actually a pretty tough grass, but if your dogs are wearing a path - like around the fence line, then it will be difficult to get grass to grow there since they will continually run over the same area. Buy some bags of mulch and cover the paths with about 2-4 inches of mulch. This will keep the area from being muddy when it gets wet and will protect the soil from getting so compacted. It will also break down over time adding nutrients to the soil and the grass will probably fill in. Cypress or Cedar mulches are good choices. They cypress will matt down and not wash away in the rain and the cedar also matts, but the dogs may not like the scent and leave those areas alone. Then again, they might like the smell and roll in it! I have learned that when you have dogs, there are just some concessions you have to make with your lawn and garden. Many times I have seen my bassett hound sitting on my patch of oregano at the corner of my garden. I think she likes it because it is soft and probably smells good. It is a good thing I have it planted in more than one spot!
