Since there is no response, I assume noone has any idea when these flashing yellow lights will mature to a REAL red light? Any ideas on what could be done? My question is: When will the flashing yellow light begin working as a full fledged red light? richardb Believe it or not, there's eleven criteria the State of Texas requires before an operating traffic signal can become fully functional and this location doesn't meet one! I requested a report from Allen's Traffic Engineer and he sent me a full report. Therefore, to make drivers aware of traffic coming out of Waters Crossing, all the City could do is install a flashing yellow light for caution purposes. The city's hands are tied on this matter. MickeyJ But how did the intersection at the entrance to Twin Creeks get a traffic light that is more than just a flashing light? richardb At Twin Creeks there is traffic coming from both sides of McDermott for one. There also is a minimum requirement of 200 cars a day, which there aren't that many coming out of Waters Crossing at McDermott. If Waters Crossing ever extends north of McDermott, changing the signal would be considered. With Alma and Bethany providing other outlets for Waters Crossing, it's unlikely the 200 car requirement would ever be met. There would also have to be a right hand turn lane only for eastbound traffic at Waters Crossing, which is unlikely due to lack of right-of-way. Another reason TXDOT has for not making the signal fully functional, is their concern the 4 degree slope coming over the hill for eastbound traffic would increase the chances of rear end collisions with cars coming to a complete stop. Also, if there were an large number of traffic accidents at Waters Crossing, it would be considered, but none were recorded in the last 12 months. Nando True Mickey, and it's virtually impossible to turn westbound on McDermott from Watters Crossing. richardb I think the best and safest option is take Bel Air to Alma and Alma to the traffic signal at McDermott to go west on McDermott. bill111 I was almost in an accident 2 days ago at this intersection (eastbound) when a person 2 cars in front of me slammed on their brakes at the intersection which I can only assume is because they thought the light was about to turn red. I contacted the city to see if they could do something about this light (turn it on, off, or remove it) and they told me they could do nothing. I think it's dangerous the way it is and for any drivers that end up in a situation similar to mine except not being so fortunate, this could cost them $$$$ when they have to pay to repair 2 or more cars. AR3years Speaking of Alma and Belaire.... What will it take to get a light there, or at least a 4 way stop? This intersection is getting bussier all the time. Kids West of Alma attending Norton must cross crazy traffic if they walk or ride bikes. The bus runs right now, but that may change.
If Comanche and Alma can have a 4 way stop then seems like this is a minimum for Alma and Belaire.Nando And turning from Southbound Alma onto Belair heading east is dangerous, those trees are making it harding to see the oncoming speeders! richardb I would suggest forwarding you inquires to Peter Tian, Traffic Engineer for the City of Allen. He knows the TXDOT rules and regulations for conducting traffic surveys and placement of traffic control devices.
