What options are there for gas companies for Allen residents? We have Coserv but I want to shop around and see who else we could use and who is better. Thanks!

There is no gas in my neighborhood, but we have Atmos at the center. It is the "new" TXU gas.

I think Atmos Energy is the name of the former TXU, which was a name change also, from the olden times, haha.

Yes, Atmos bought TXU Gas. The name on the bill changed two billing cycles ago and they advertised the change on television.

I have Coserv also. Are you sure you even have a choice of gas companies? I know that something about since we are with a co-op, we don't have the options everyone else does. I think we are stuck with them.

Really? That stinks, I was hoping to at least be able to shop around and compare. I also have been turned off by their online bill pay system, they now charge $3.95 if you want to pay online. It's 2005, there's zero excuse to charge your customers to pay their bill. They need to dump the company they're using or go with another provider for EFT's, $4 is ridiculous.

Bank One/Chase allows online Banking - I pay no fee and pay COSERV thru them. May try another way.

When I moved to Allen, I had gas and electricity with TXU and when disconnecting the service in my old home, they asked if I wanted to use TXU in the new home. Which causes me to believe that you can choose your gas co. Call Atmos and find out. I don't believe an organization being a cooperative makes it a monopoly.
But then I've been wrong several times!

The electricity market in Texas was deregulated several years ago. That's why you have TXU, Reliant, etc. The gas market has not been deregulated. Unless you are a co-op member, you have to go to Atmos or TXU or whatever it's called today. Sorry!!

Sorry, forgot to add that the co-ops buy the gas from TXU. They have so many members that they use a collective bargaining agreement to lower the cost per member.

I agree with Maurice...CoServ just !$&%.
On this months CoServ statement was the following invite:
Coserv Electric's 65th Annual Meeting is on June 21, 2005. Come join the fun. There will be music, barbecue, door prizes and a change to win a 1997 Chevrolet C1500 truck!
Wow...thats really what I would like to win, a 8 year old Chevy truck...can you believe that %?!&?

EdK, before our wise and wonderful webmaster chastises you please edit your last word in your reply. This site frowns upon words of that kind. I agree that it seems sort-of silly to give away a 1997 truck, but with gasoline prices as high as they are maybe it is the only way to get rid of the thing.

I dont think that the words I used in my post were that bad, you can hear them on a daily base on radio and TV. I didn't use the f-word or s-word. Come on...live in the real world, kids pick up those words at school and from their friends anyway, it will not turn them into a 'bad person'
Sorry, that this post is a kind of off topic.

Guess you did not grow up in a rural area...this is a pretty standard electric Co-Op event all across the country. Each year they have a meeting, serve BBQ, have a band and give away a tv, microwave and occassionally a used vehielce...typically from their service fleet.
This is a 'small town' type event, obviously since they are bumping up against the big city...soem of their customers are not used to the quaintness of doing business with a co-op.
I do not like the service they provide...too many times the power goes off...but I appreciate them for what they are.

Since we are talking about Gas Companies, is everyone with Atmos getting the "Gas Cost Recovery" charges like I am? When this starting happening last year I called to find out what the charges were. I didn't get very far and the girl told me if I wanted to complain to call the Railroad Commission!

Here is how it works: Whichever company installed the gas lines to your house (block/subdivision) is your gas provider. I used to have TXU Gas, which is now Atmos Gas. Yes, they have a Energy Recovery Fee, but so do all the others, its just called something else. I just recently moved, and I am now a Co-Serv gas customer. Why? Because they installed the gas lines, and they own the gas lines. So guess who I am FORCED to use. Unlike electricity providers which was recently deregulated (and which TXU Electric still owns the lines) gas service is still regulated. So there is no choice when it comes to service providers. Since I was setting up my account with Co-Serv, I asked how much a bill with 8.5 MCf (thousand cubic feet) of gas usage would be, and it came out to be $79+ for the month. My Atmos (TXU) gas bill for the same amount was $68+. It doesn't sound like much but over a year that will total to over $120. If you have Atmos, be happy. They are probably the lowest rates around, even with the recovery fee. They are the BIGGEST buyer/provider of natural gas, so they get the rates just a little bit lower than the others.
Solution: An act of the Texas State Legislature.
Signed a new Co-Serv customer. Unfortunately.
