I just moved and took advantage of DSL from SBC. Since installing it, I have had some problems. After sitting for any length of time, like overnight, I get errors and can't connect to email or the web. Recycling the modem does nothing. The only thing that works is rebooting the computer. Then everything seems to be working. That leads me to believe it is in the computer. I don't know what it could be. Any ideas? I had similar problems like this on the old computer and needed to replace the network card. I'd like some opinions as this computer is still under warranty. Thanks for your thoughts.

We too had the same problem upon moving to Allen 1 yr. ago. Our computer is only 1 yr. old so I believe the problem lies w/SBC DSL.

I have been using SBC DSL and Windows XP for quit awhile. I have not had any problems. Although in the beginning, a long, long time ago, I had a similar problem. I was using Windows 98 at the time. I took off all of the software that SBC supplied and everything worked fine from then on. Are you using the SBC software?

I installed the software, but I use Internet Explorer stand alone not the Yahoo branded browser, and Outlook Express.

It's been so long ago but....it seems like there was something called a "Connection Manager". If I remember correctly, this was the culprit.

Do you know if you have a static IP? Wonder if you're running into a lost lease issue with your IP, shouldn't be the case but a reboot fixes it so maybe.

Count me in, too ... I used to have Yahoo DSL through SBC back in Richardson, and even configured it for Windows XP, Linux, and then FreeBSD. I might have my old config files somewhere.

I don't have SBC DSL but had a similar problem with one of my computers and Comcast. The problem was caused by stinky software drivers for the 10/100baseT LAN card. Specifically it had to do with the power saving features not waking up properly when the computer came back from standby mode. The solution was to go into the hardware configuration for the LAN card and turn off the power saving features of the LAN card. Good luck.

Do you happen to have any spare Ethernet cards lying around? (If not, they are quite cheap these days.) Try swapping out the old one and see what the new one gets you. Make sure you try a different chipset if possible.

That is what the problem was a couple years back on my old computer. What does the above line mean? What is a different chipset?

Many different makers of Ethernet cards use a set of integrated circuit chips from only a few makers, making differences between them negligble. As an example, consider (fictional) manufacturer SleepyTech; they make an Ethernet card that uses a chipset by Potato Instruments. Another manufactuerer, AnasthesiaCom, makes two cards; the model X-1 uses the chipset by Potato Instruments, the model Y-2 uses the chipset by Buffalo Technologies.
If SleepyTech's card isn't working in your system, swapping in the X-1 by AnasthesiaCom might not help either. But the Y-2 might work better.

I used to have SBC DSL when I lived in Richardson, but when I moved to Allen (April 2004) SBC promisd me that I would have just as fast speeds --- came to find out that I couldn't achieve half of the promised speed. I hated to give them up, but I went with Comcast Cable Internet access and have to tell you --- IT'S FREAKIN FAST!!!!
ALSO -- Rumor has it (reliable source at SBC), they are going to be dropping fiber optic around my neighborhood (Shadow Lakes)!! Don't know exactly when, but I imagine before the end of te year. With the new fiber, I hear that you'll be able to get up to 10mb down~~~!!! WooHoo!!

Only my opinion, but there is something wrong on your end. I have SBC DSL here in McKinney and my system/ DSL connection stays up for days or weeks with no reboot.
Are the errors in Windows (lock ups and such)or just accessing web pages/email only?
Check for virus, spyware and such.

Shlubo,
Lets assume the issue is not coming from outside your home. Since you had the same problem with two different computers the issue could possibly be upstream (either your router or your modem). Now because of energy conservation the manufacturers or software makers might have put a powersave feature on either. My suggestion would be to:
- Browse your routers configuration software (address in manual) and disable any powersave features - If disabling the features does not work update the routers firmware to the latest version then do a hard reset on it. - Update your modems firmware or swap out the modem with a different one (most computer stores will let you try the modem and return it if it does not solve the issue)
Please let me know if this helps.

Thanks, 50cal. I guess I should have reported back that this is no longer an issue. I appreciate your advice and will keep it in mind should it ever come up again.

I work for SBC and can tell you fiber obtic technology is coming to this whole metroplex. Your TV, phone, and DSL will all come through the same cable. So instead your TV will plug into a phone jack. Problem is not everyone has phone jacks next to there TV (Thats where my job comes in). Anyway, it should be avaliable by the end of the year if not the start of next year. Be excited it's super fast and very reliable. It's lightspeed (Optical joke)
