PC problems??
      #23363 - 12/26/05 05:49 PM

Everyone,

I recently moved from Michigan, so I am new to the area. If you have any PC questions, I will try to answer them. I build PC's (hobby), so I know a little about how they tick.

Happy Holidays!

Roy

Welcome in RoyP. Tick? Hmmm, I think ticking is about the only problem mine doesn't have, haha. If I can't get my helper to correct it, I may holler.

Welcome RoyP! I have one for you......One of my computers was eaten up by Trojans (over 28,000 infected files) This was the teens computer so there isnt really anything important on it. I removed all of the problems with PC-Cillin antivirus and Microsoft spyware remover & got it pretty clean. HOWEVER that stuff is still in there somewhere and fights the antivirus constantly to get back in. Should I just get a new hard drive or what??

Welcome to Allen! My MIL used to live in Adrian, and my sister was born in Kalamazoo. (gosh I hope I spelled that right) I think you will like Allen! I do.

Thank you everyone! I already like it here. It is a bit getting used to the weather, but I'm sure I will acclimate.

Hi Mizk!

I originally hail from Waterford, which is about 5 miles west of Pontiac. I don't know if you know where Pontiac is, but I would guess it is about 40 miles North-West of Detroit.

Hi Fence buff,

Well, if you still have problems, it could be one of two things.

One would be that one of the programs currently installed on the computer (known or possibly unknown) is putting new adware and popup requests on the computer. So no matter how much you try to clean it, the inherent program (I think the most common types of programs that causes problems are music download programs such as Kazaa or Napster) puts the spyware back onto the computer. The only solution is to find the bad program(s) and remove them.

The second reason could be registry keys that were not fully cleaned when the adware was removed. Some registry keys are designed to look onto the web for program downloads, which put adware back onto the machine. This is common with computers which have broadband connections, since they are always connected to the net.

I would buy a harddrive as a last resort, but it wouldn't really come to that. By re-formatting your existing drive and re-installing your operating system (OS), you would get a harddrive that is as good as new.

Of course your suggestion would work, but it is a bit drastic. If you don't care about the data on the disk, the format and re-install of the OS could be the quickest. If you do have programs that you want to try to salvage (or devices that may be hard to re-install the drivers for) I would use a program that searches for adware as well as bogus programs (which may be hidden from you when you view the installed programs sections of windows).

My suggestion is to not use one adware program; I have never found one to find everything. I usually have two or three cleaners/adware removers that I keep on the disk that I use to thoroughly clean my hard-drive. Lavasoft's ad-aware, spybot, and registry cleaner by Glarysoft are among my favorites. Another site is Lexun freeware, which has a registry cleaner that is pretty good.

I hope this helps! -Roy

Fence Buff -

format \C:

Roy alluded to this, but before you reformat your hard drive, make sure you have a good start up disk and ALL of your hardware drivers saved off. Sometimes even the hardware that comes with your computer when you buy it (graphics or PCI cards, for example) use drivers that are only on your hard drive - not on the o/s disk that came with your PC.

Making sure you have all your drivers before reformatting will save you opening the back of the case, pulling the offending card, writing down the manufacturer info, and then surfing the net to download the proper driver. (Do you hear a little "been there, done that" in this advice? )

This is important even if you get a new hard drive - you still need to drive all the other stuff in your box. Good luck!!

Yep! I know where Pontiac is, never been there although I'm sure my husband has. I've only been to Detroit, Port Huron, and Mackinac Island.

Welcome to Allen and thanks for volunteering your PC expertise on the boards. Maybe you could help civicminded with his fussy computer.

Haha...just got in from a day of Scout training...and the newest crazy dog in my zoo, destroyed much of my stuff around the puter! But, she left the crazy computer alone. After six attempts, I'm finally in here tonight. And just to get a feel for the technical troubles, I'm watching Tron while I post!
