Hard Drive Question
      #23660 - 01/07/06 07:06 PM

I have a couple of hard drive questions (Windows XP):
1. Is there a way to know how many hard drives there are in my computer without removing the cover?
2. How can I tell which hard drive partitions are on which drives? In the old days, I just used FDISK.

Try this:

From the START menu, select PROGRAMS, then ACCESSORIES, then SYSTEM TOOLS, then SYSTEM INFO

This should give you a pop-up window

On the left hand menu, expand COMPONENTS and then STORAGE

Its getting weirder and weirder. When I went to open System Info (msinfo32.exe) it brings up Help and Support Center. The same pop-up you get when you select Start, then Help and Support. I am sure I have gone into System Information in the past and got the correct screen. I am not sure why this is coming up.

I went into My Computer, View System Information (in left panel), Hardware tab, Device Manager, then clicked on Disk Drives. It shows my physical hard drives but no partition information..

I think I have a hard drive install disk somewhere. I will hunt that down and see if it has a FDISK program on it.

Btw: My end-goal is to install Windows on a new hard drive and start over but, I need to be sure I have everything backed up. Thats why I need to know what partition is on which hard drive.

Wow! That's a cool "map" of Management Tools. I had not heard of these (they have been keeping them a good secret).
I used diskmgmt.msc and it told me what I needed to know. I also bookmarked this site for future reverence.

Michael,

vrs mentioned a great site with the basic 'msc' launches that winxp has.

Another way of getting at all the tools in one place is to right click the 'my computer' icon on your desktop. There will be an option on the list labeled 'manage.' Choosing that will show all the utilities and tools winxp has to manage your computer (hardware and software). It is aptly named.

Also, for partitions, the disk management system option will show you if a hard drive has more than one partition on it, and how much space each partition has.

Hope this helps!

-Roy
