Anyone else watch this show? I've not sat down to watch it on TV (I hate commercials, I just wait for the DVD's now) but started watching Season 1 this week. Wow, what a great show! Michael Chiklis is GREAT in this series. It's not for kids (for older teens it would be OK) but is geared for adults who like more realism in their shows.
Another great series by FX starts in a couple of weeks, 'Rescue Me' (another adult show) with Dennis Leary. It's on the same level as The Shield (both have some vulgarity) as a gritty look at life for NY firemen, including their personal lives.
These are two of my favorite series, even though I catch them on DVD mainly. Same with '24', although I did watch it on TV this season. I find it better and more enjoyable to watch them one after the other on disc. Can't wait to see what happens in Season 5 of '24'. :)

I think this would fall more under TV Shows forum than Movie Review, even on DVD.
I've watched this show for the past four seasons, and have not wavered on my thoughts that this is one of the most compelling shows on TV. I feel like I'm watching a HBO/Showtime quality show. Made for adults. I don't think I'd let a 17-yr old watch it. Not while I'm in the room.
During the network broadcasts, I've noticed that the first commercial breaks sometimes start at about 20-23 minutes into the show. That's unbelievable. They last 4-5 minutes, just long enough to catch your breath and leave you hanging for more.
Many people I know have tried to watch, but cannot get over the raw, gritty, in-your-face drama that makes this show that good. Great acting. When you really grow to hate a character, that is good acting. When you can't separate the actor from the character, that is good acting.
Hard to believe Vic Mackey was the good-guy in "The Commish". And the same comic character in "Daddy-O." Although he first started playing this Mackey-type character in a couple of episodes of "Miami Vice" a long time ago.

True, it does fall under TV rather than movies but I was already in here and done posting when I realized it. lol
I agree, this is definitely a solid show and the entire cast does a GREAT job here. Smart, tight writing that manages to keep walking the fine line between legal and illegal. Mackey's character covers both worlds, he's a dirty cop and at the same time a good cop. Chiklis does an incredible job with this role, hope it stays on the air for many years to come.

Well, this past Tuesday (6/14) was the season finale, and another FX series--"Rescue Me" is filling it's time slot. The new season for The Shield won't start until probably March 2006. FX (Comcast ch. 48) will show the episode again Friday night at 10:00 pm and then again of Sunday at 9:00 pm. It may not make much sense on what's going on without any knowledge of the characters' history. Every character has a good solid history. Not just the main characters. When they won the Golden Globe for Best Drama a couple of years ago, all 10+ characters went up to accept the award. Michael Chiklas won a Best Actor also.

MsAlyce, you can rent them from Blockbuster to fill in the time between now and the next season. It will also get you up to speed on the characters and their backstories. It's a great show and on DVD, you really get a good sense of the storyline the writers are giving you as the continuity really shows.

Thank you! I'll do that. I like "adult" time at home, and my viewing habits show it.

So what's everyone thinking of Season 5 thus far? Loved the Russian sting a couple of episodes ago, that was GREAT!

I hate Forrest Whitaker. As an actor, and as a director. I guess that is why I hate his character so much. I love what is going on with the show. I can't wait to see where they take this. I couldn't believe Corrine gave up Vic like that, but you knew it was going to happen--she took the gum from Cavanaugh when he held it out.

Whitaker is definitely a jerk on the show, he has his character down PAT! Gotta agree with you on Becca, the attorney. :) I also think I'd like to swap jobs with Julian and have his trainee, now she's another cutie who thinks FAST on her feet. Was impressed with the way she handled herself in that undercover deal Vic put her on, acted like a seasoned vet.
Be interesting to see how Dutch handles Claudette's situation next week. Corinne had to give up Vic, she did take the gum as you said. lol Good thing though is Vic really won her over to his side last week (IMO) by telling her to take care of herself, he doesn't want her or the kids hurt, he'd take care of himself. I think she'll be more careful from now on with Cavanaugh.

Looks like Vic got a hold of Becca after all.
I cannot believe tonight is the season finale, and 90 minutes long. And we have to wait until next January for another season. This just kills me.

A long wait, but we will get Rescue Me back on to replace the Shield until next season.

Just finished watching the season finale and all I can say is WOW!!!!!! What a surprise ending, didn't expect it and I guess based on the ending we can expect to see Forrest Whitaker's character back next season.

As soon as I saw Shane pull up, I knew something was going to happen. Shane has always been the louse of The Strike Team.
I feel very bad for Lem, but if you think about it, he had it coming. He burned all of the money from the Armenian money train. All but $65K for each. Like Shane said, "We have the Armenian mob looking for us for $65K apiece?"
Kavanaugh may not be back. With Lem out of the way, the case seals off. Vic & Ronnie both had surveillance on them, so their whereabouts were accounted for. Shane can say the same thing, although he didn't have a tail.
The Crowley murder case is going away, because the only two witnesses are Shane and Vic. And they've already given their testimony. Nothing to the contrary.
There is nothing left of the money train.
Aceveda may still have to worry about Mitchell, because of the hit Aceveda had Mitchell do on Lozano.
Vic won't take out Shane. But he will ostracize him. But eventually will bring him back. Vic will accept that as long as Lem was alive, and in hiding, they would never be rid of the "heat."
Sad ending, but it had to be done. But I still think it was the best way to end everything, but in the worst possible way.

Agreed. That was a gut wrenching scene, even though I had a strong feeling something would happen I expected a gunshot to the head not the grenade. Then seeing Shane struggle over it as Lem lay there dying, man that was emotional.
As always though, EXCELLENT show!
