low battery

A friend of mine has a used PC and it was working fine until recently when it gets "low battery" even when plugged in. Tried switching batteries and same thing. Could new OS (XP) be pulling more power (Windows 2000)? Or, could any other new software be pulling more power?

I highly doubt it is a OS based issue. If the computer is rather old then sometimes parts will wear out. Sounds like a hardware issue to me.
