Laptop Power Cord vs Battery
      #32944 - 10/15/06 02:43 PM

Hey all. We just purchased our first laptop computer. The tech told me we should charge up the battery, then use it and run it completely down, then recharge rather than using it with the power cord all the time. He said that using it with the power cord would shorten the life of the battery. Any thoughts or advice?

If it's like the one on my Fire Engine (hope not), the battery must be taken out and put back in to get it to come on.

I have two laptops. One I use at work all day and the other one is for home. The one at work is plugged into a docking station all day every day. I also bring it home and on trips. I have never had problems with the battery. On my home laptop, it is not always convenient to plug-in. But when I can, I use it while it is plugged in.
I think this guy is living in the past.back in the old days when Ni-Cad batteries were usedthis was true. They had memory. If you did not fully discharge them, they would only partially charge. Ever since they came out with Ni-Mh and now Lithium/Lithium Ion that is no longer true.

Michael is right. Unless you've purchased a used laptop which may be older and still have the Ni-Cad battery.

My experience is a little different - and reinforces what you were told when you bought your laptop.

The battery is totally shot in my 18 month HP Pavilion zv5000. I have it plugged in all day at work and then use it in the evenings - also plugged in. The battery life from full charge to zero is about 5 minutes right now and a new battery is on order.

My IT guy said the same thing as the tech told you - if you leave them plugged in all the time, you shorten the life of the battery - but hey, that's what we all do.

Hope you enjoy your new computer!!!!
