Sniping on Ebay
      #27925 - 06/10/06 08:35 PM

Its so frustrating to get outbid at the last moment on Ebay. There has got to be some type of software these snipers are using. Anyone know what is going on?

Let Ebay do it for you.

http://pages.ebay.com/help/buy/proxy-bidding.html

Here's how bidding on eBay works:
1) When you place a bid, you enter the maximum amount you'd be willing to pay for the item. Your maximum amount is kept confidential from other bidders and the seller.

2) The eBay system compares your bid to those of the other bidders.

3) The system places bids on your behalf, using only as much of your bid as is necessary to maintain your high bid position (or to meet the reserve price). The system will bid up to your maximum amount.

4) If another bidder has a higher maximum, you'll be outbid. BUT, if no other bidder has a higher maximum, you win the item. And you could pay significantly less than your maximum price! This means you don't have to keep coming back to re-bid every time another bid is placed.

There is software out there to do it but I do it the old fashion way. I sit there at the computer and wait until the last minute (actually seconds) and place my maximum bid. I also like this because I am not tempted to bid higher when I see I am out bid. I decide how much I am willing to pay and then place my bid with 15 seconds to go. I can't change my mind anymore at that point.

I know about proxy bidding, but in the last second I'll lose a bid for a few cents difference. Its just strange the way it happens. I thought there was some type of software out there, I just don't know what it is. Some use third party bidders, but I don't know about that.

Do a search on Google for "eBay sniper" ... that'll give you hundreds of results from companies that sell auction sniper software. I personally don't like it...I just use Michale's method.

Good luck!

Thanks that helps. I'll pass that along to my husband. He's wanting to figure out what is going on and filed a complaint with Ebay. Alot of good it will do. Sniping apparently is legal.

I have never figured out why people bid so many times on a seven day auction. All you are doing is driving up the price. I always put my max bid in and if I win the auction great and if I don't there will always be more auctions to bid on. I noticed some bidders have to be high bidder from the time the auction starts and will bid every time they get out bid. They are paying way too much. I usually bid with about one minute left thinking that the others bid ders will think there is not much interest in the item and that they will win without having to bid again. Some times it works but most times it doesn't. I think the bidders get so caught up with the auction that they have win at all costs even if it's twice what the item is worth. Just go to a live auction and you will it happen. I have bid on stuff that I thought if I didn't win I would never see another on but there always is another one out there. Just think about what you are doing and don't get carried away and you will get what you want maybe not today but maybe tomorrow.

Don't know about software kinda things. But, this ebayer is a sniper!! I often bid in the last few seconds, and have won items with one second left, woo-hoo! It's an auction, and therefore is supposed to work that way. It can't be complained about I wouldn't think??

There are bad apples in there however, and they should be reported, along with the daily scam/spams we get that are fraud messages.

We don't put in a price till the last minute. Hit refresh then bid again. These snipers are able to refresh their screen, put in their bid within seconds and your auction item is gone that quick. My husband lost three auctions in a row. Gosh when I was bidding on Ebay last year I spent WAY to much money just putting in high bids after I got sniped four times in a row by just a penny.

I've never refreshed and tried again, as my bid was very late. So time wasn't left for me to keep trying. Most of my "wants" are small value items, but I admit to going for too many things, haha. When I get stomped on at the end, it just saves me money.

I decide on my highest bid, wait until there are seconds left and then put in my highest bid. If I get sniped, I go to another auction or buy it elsewhere. It can be annoying but that's part of the game of E-Bay.

Yep, that's me too. I could many more if I made my bid at the end (like all my successful ones). But sometimes, sense out-values cents, and I decide to let it go to someone else. Actually, I do this intentionally sometimes for new bidders, letting them win the auction. Now if I think I really "NEED" that item, I let them learn by watching me get it, haha. But I do mentor (behind the scenes) people in ebay methods, and in details on the categories I collect/buy from.

Last year when I was trying to get my son the new Xbox live, it was so frustrating getting outbid at the last second. Then I found a great deal at three in the morning at Circuit City so I was vindicated. I believe it was girls dress up clothes I spent way to much on. Then it was something else. It was my first time on Ebay and I was being stubborn. When I looked at my bank statement that month, I was shocked. I've been good ever since. I'm glad I don't gamble.

Haha, yeah, neither do I, unless ya count ebay, haha. Until I understood the proxy thingy, I always thought someone out there was outbidding me at every bid I placed. A friend of mine, newer to ebay, thinks this also. I've tried to tell him that ebay is bidding automatically for him.

But since the topic is sniping, I do still admit to that. Oops, gotta check the auctions now.

I was at Fry's last night and saw a software program called "Final Bid!" for $29.95. It was an automated sniping program.
I prefer to do it the old fashion way of watching the second hand on the clock.
You really know you are addicted when you set your alarm clock for 4:00am on a weekend just to get up and put that last bid in. But I am not admitting to anything.

I snipe with BayGenie. I got sick of being sniped.

BayGenie has a free version that allows you to bid on one item at a time. That should be good for most.

I had no idea there was any sniping software items. I would never want that, even though I will snipe when I need to. The automatic proxy bidding, or sniping usually work for me. I do show some control (sometimes) by simply backing away when time is short.
