Wild mushrooms in yard?
      #33414 - 10/28/06 04:08 PM

Our lawn seems to get a couple of wild mushrooms every other week. After some days, they dry and whittle away.

I've tried putting some weed killer on it, but no results.

Anybody else encountered this? What is the solution???

Any particular brand of weed killer that we should use?

They're harmless. Just knock them over or mow them and they will break down to provide nutrients for the soil. Just don't eat them!

Thanks, Denise! Yes, that's exactly what we've been doing - mowing them over. But, we also keep a sharp eye on our dog, to make sure she doesn't taste them while out doin' her business

Yes, it is amazing what dogs will eat or pick up in their mouths. My lab picked up a 4' 2"x4" the other day and was dragging it around the patio. He also helped himself to a couple jalepenos from my garden to chew on. He didn't chew on those for very long!

If the mushrooms really bother you, you might consider that mushrooms like moisture. Maybe your soil isn't draining well enough. Core aeration can help with this for the future.
On a side note, Denise, I had a Standard poodle when I was a kid and he LOVED jalapenos! LOL! My dad used them to try to teach my dog not to beg at the table. It kind of back fired.

Thank you both for your advice!
Isn't it amazing what dogs like to eat?
I have not tried to grow a kitchen garden, bcause I'm not sure how I can keep our dog away from all those goodies :-)
The same goes for fruit trees!

Not just dogs. There are people today that have pulled yard mushrooms for cooking purposes.

Didn't those people listen to their parents? Those types of fungi are poisonous.

Now, when I lived in Minnesota many years ago, we used to go out in the woods to pick morel mushrooms (also called sponge mushrooms because their texture looks like a sponge) and cook and eat those. They were so delicious! People need to know what they're doing before going out to find mushrooms to eat.

Well, I was holding back a little, out of politeness. With the many cultures in our melting pot today, many people have a different frame of reference about where foods may be found.
