What are they building next to the Dollar General on east McDermott. Looks too small to be a Pep Boys.

Dry cleaners? Donut shop? Mini Bank? Nail salon? I know that Allen needs more of those.

My guess would be a hambuger place since it's not big enough to be storage units.

Don't worry Tiffany, it's Allen so it'll be one of the above mentioned businesses. A donut shop, bank, dry cleaners, or storage place as we seem to be a magnet for only those businesses.

I'm guessing that if you wanted to find out badly enough you could. The building permits are probably a public record. Personally I'll just wait and see.

I don't need to know that bad! LOL I am patient enough to wait but I really wish they would post what kind of stuff they are building!! Seems to me it would generate interest.

And the answer is...they are building an Oil Depot. Makes sense, they will be sitting between 2 parts stores.

There already is an Oil Depot right there, just on the other side of O'Reilly Auto Parts. I wonder if they are building a bigger place, or if this is another company?

Why are we(East) getting all the crud!? LOL. I hate it! I really think that if they keep building these kind of places over here, our property value will just keep going lower and lower. My $0.02 :)

Agreed. This is what I keep saying when it comes to East and West with businesses not being here, we end up getting nothing but garbage businesses on the East side. It's definitely not going to help property values, of course for tax purposes our values will 'increase' so they can throw more money into other projects in the town.

But, the number of quick oil-change businesses are split evenly east and west.

What would you like to see built on our eastside? Where would you like to see it built?

More great restaurants, stores like Bath & Body Works, clothing stores, craft or scrapbook store. Oh, hubby wants Tru Value to open back up -- Home Depot is too far when you need to repair dog damage really fast.

Right on east Main Street, anywhere between Greenville and Malone. I think Bethany is too residential to put anything like that in, except for the Kroger shopping center. On the positive side, we do have some fabulous parks all within walking distance of my house!

I think it should be more of distinguishing ourselves over the West Side. I started a thread on revitalizing Old Downtown, but this should apply to the rest of the East Side -- so, how about some Arts (Museums, Galleries) or maybe a really nice sports field (soccer, baseball, ice hockey, etc.). Top that off with some nice places to eat and niche shops... AND get rid of all the Dollar stores, Storage units, Donut shops, and enough with the Oil change places -- which are way more expensive than the dealership (In my case anyway)! The thing is, since the East Side is older, we have all these strip/mini malls that are really ugly and old -- most of which are vacant -- take Corner of McDermott/Greenville -- you have that one with Big Lots in it...and across the street is another that I have no idea what's there because it's all beat up. The corner of Bethany / Greenville ... where that little portable coffee place is -- how many vacancies are in there? Across the street from that -- another old strip mall that I never go to. ... I can bet you that the new Wings place didn't set up shop in one of those existing places is because they are old and ugly ... just saying that things need to be cleaned up -- maybe remodeling these places is in order ?? These are just some examples; there are others I've seen.
side note: I love all the trees lined up down McDermott -- they should carry that same theme all the way down Main to Allen Heights -- mirror that over on Bethany too.

Although there is no ice hockey rink, Celebration Station has very nice soccer & baseball fields, not to mention the huge play area.

Perhaps, all those "old" places should just be torndown? Not that I mean to be snippy but the property owners probabley don't want to. The buildings met the standards when they were built, they may look old now, but how do you force them to update the look? You really need to look at some of the places you mentioned because there are businesses that have been in those locations a long time, example Karate for Kids over ten years! Building anything from Allen Heights east toward Malone and beyond would be bad business planning, the road will someday widen and road construction is a killer to businesses. I'm a proud eastsider I would like to see remodeling and updating of our existing shopping centers. I think the eastside has wonderful parks, landscaped streets, and our schools have gotten more than a few face lifts. Maybe an action committee could approach the existing landowners to update and remodel. It really is a matter of cost of remodel vs build new. Maybe right now it is still cheaper to build new.

I don't mind a dollar store being in the area, as long as it doesn't become the standard type of business and that's the way it feels on the east end. All the businesses here are 'cheap' meaning they offer little value and one doesn't go into them very often.
Big Lots is a decent store for what it does, Aaron's is a nice addition as are the other stores in that section. The section towards Main is where the selection goes away and if it weren't for the dollar store I wouldn't see much traffic over there.
The Winn Dixie strip mall is a mess, it's ugly, no stores are there really worth visiting and while there are always these 'rumors' nothing is being done with WD. The town needs to try to attract some businesses in, give them a reason to come here not wait for them to decide to come on their own. Nice businesses as was said earlier, like a 'bath and bodyworks' store (meaning that caliber) will help bring in other businesses. There's potential on the east side that is just being overlooked, makes the east side look forgotten.

I guess it was late February but I have seen people working on the Winn Dixie building. They had a crew working on the roof, and a few days after that there was a construction crew working inside. As for the widening of McDermott out towards Malone, this too is slowly getting started. They have everything marked off, and it looks like they are laying the new drainage and cables. The sign says it should be completed by Aug. 06. I too would love to see more nice places to shop on this side. Does anyone know what else they plan on putting in at the new shopping center at Angel Parkway and Stacy Rd? Its a nice new center with a lot of empty shops.

Speaking of new construction, what is going in the space next to The Peanut Gallery on the corner of Exchange and Allen Heights?

I guess the "problem" is that any new MAJOR retailer is going to want access off of Central. Look at the developments that are planned... Starwood, Market Street(?) right off of Central.
I for one would like to see a Babies R Us in Allen. I was hoping that it would go into the old Kfart location. This area is aching for a BRU. The nearest one is Preston and Park. The Allen, McKinney, Frisco, and Plano areas could EASILY support a store that size. But then do you want a nice store like that in a run-down old location like WD? I have no viable ideas for what could go in the old WD. But then--who does AND who do we voice that to?
And Bath and Body Works does have a store, right by Tom Thumb. A Bed, Bath and Beyond (big retailer) is at 15th and 75, and a new one is up in McKinney. A Linens 'N Things could go up but would fail in the WD location, because of lack of high exposure.
As for all of the other comments about self storage, dry cleaners, donut shops, I agree.

The Eagles sport training is going into the WD. It is incumbent upon the owner of a shopping center to remodel and market their center to attract new businesses, not the city. Obviously the owner is losing money without the cashflow from empty spaces but it may be simply a tax loss.

They might not be loosing money if the write-off is big enough. I only know that because some 16 years ago when I was looking for a place to open the owners did not want our money they wanted the write-off. Thank goodness for Carl Gilliland he was (and is) our gaurdian angel.

The landlord is looking to do a little remolding of the Winn-Dixie or the New Eagle's Wings location as we like to think of it. Its been some sort of a tax right-off but they were still collecting rent of sorts on it. Anyway with EWA moving in they want to lease the other side and know they have to clean it up to attract another client. At this point they have had some people looking but nothing major. Hopefully EWA continues to produce some top quality athletes and brings in top notch coaches and we can take the whole building one day. So that not only does one of the best gymnast, cheerleader, dancer or karate people in the world come from Allen but also trains in Allen.
