What would be the cause of black spots on my shrubs? The spots are not all over a shrub that has black spots and not on all the shrubs. Is there a treatment I should apply?

What kind of shrub are you having a problem with? Shrubs such as red tip photinias and Indian hawthornes tend to get this. Sounds like fungal leaf spot. Do the spots start out as yellow and then start to turn black in the center? If you want to try something organic, you could try a garlic spray or compost tea spray or a combination of these two. If you want to use a synthetic product, most nursery professionals would recommend a fungicide with daconil. Be careful using this. Wear protective clothing, safety goggles, gloves, etc. and don't use on a windy day because you don't want to inhale it or get it on your skin. You will also want to remove the leaves with severe damage and clean up any diseased leaves that are already on the ground before treating.

They are red tip photinias. I believe the spot is completely dark. I'll follow your instructions and hopefully they will heal. Thanks!

That is such a common problem with red tip photinias. Please be aware that even though you try to control it, once they have it, it is very difficult to fight and they will eventually die. Consider removing them and using something else less susceptible. If you want an organic solution, check out my reply in the discussion about the powdery mildew. The Garrett Juice or the sick tree treatment would be worth a try if you didn't want to use a synthetic chemical fungicide.
They had this problem at Vaughan Elementary and ended up with complete hedges that had died. Now there are blank spots in the hedge rows between the holly hedges where they removed the photinias. There is still a row of them along our gym and these too are fading fast - starting to look bare.

Yep, about all you can do for those photinias - hope for the best. I just wanted you to be prepared if in the next few years, they didn't make it. I know some people really like their red tip photinias.

rtdb - Hey, I wouldn't even wait that long. They are pretty when they're healthy and planted in the right place so they have room to grow, but when they start getting sick, it is usually downhill from there!
