Has anyone heard how the Allen skate park is doing? Are the kids enjoying it?

Some of our students at the center LOVE it!! I hear them staking all time time it is a very pleasing sound. When they are listening to music it doesn't seem too loud, but we are aways away.

I've seen it "covered" in the monthly broadcast on the City channel. It looks like a big hit. I'm not into the skateboarding stuff, but it's neat the City has taken a big step to do such an effort, for it is popular. As a safety nut, I just hope people use their safety equipment.

When school was out, I took my son there with some friends - it seemed really cool. They are only 10 and I think they kinda got in the way of the other kids that where a little faster then them, but they really liked it. I have heard since we where there they put drink machines out - it was really Hot.

I was reading some posts on the Frisco On-line site - several people were very envious of the skate park. One person even asked, "Why does Allen get all of the cool stuff - the indoor swimming pool and now the skate park?" I had to grin since I sometimes wish we had some of Frisco's shopping in our fine city. Anyhow - I wouldn't trade Allen for Frisco.

Come on down and catch some hockey too this fall, we'll be playing at the two rinks in the skate park. It is a beautiful facility and I'm envious I didn't have rinks like these to play roller hockey on when I was a kid. lol

It's at N. Cedar and St. Mary, near the Heritage structures.

He's signed up now! Yeah! The roller hockey rinks were closed the other day. Anyone know why?

The hockey rinks are closed this week as they repair the surfaces. There were a couple of spots where the surface was in need of repair, so they're taking care of it now before the season starts.

The graffiti adds quite a bit to the overall experience.

I can tell you the vandalism isn't just at the skate park. They've had problems with kids riding/skating over to the Allen Heritage Park and doing some damage over there. It is a shame some kids can't respect our past and what our city and the Allen Heritage Guild is trying to do to provide an educational park that preserves the history of Allen.

We have had vandals breaking some of our bus windows, in the last 3-4 years. When we first opened we used to be able to leave the keys in the buses, boy not any more!! Allen is just going through rites of passage on our way to being "bigger"

As the parent of one of the regular skateboarders at the park, I would like to stress that the kids who are skating at the park are extremely good kids.
We have had a couple of incidents where other kids have come in and acted disruptive. In one case, a kid lit up a cigerette. Our kids were not happy and by the power of peer pressure and the help of two dads, they asked the trouble makers to leave.
They like to skate with out getting in trouble for being in somebodies way (back of Winn Dixie good example). The love the layout of the skate park because it allows them to be challenged. The hold each other to a very intense code of conduct. The kids love the park and will do whatever it takes to keep it.
My son loves it when I come up there to watch. His buddies like to come raid my ice chest for drinks. They all think they are "cool as heck". It is a great way to meet your kid's friends and see what they are about. And they are more comfortable because you are on their turf.
I would like to see more benches put in. You tend to get itchy sitting on the grass.
It is very exciting to watch these kids push themselves to the limits.
Hopefully the few bad apples who are acting like thugs will not ruin it for the rest of the kids or tarnish their reputations simply because of their age group.

I know that most kids are good and will behave themselves, but there are always a few that ruin it for the rest of the community by doing things they shouldn't.

That is true. So, to fix it, we the parents, need to be more visible in our kids and our kids' friends, lives.
I could certainally use more company up at the park. It is a great way for the parents to get to know each other, which really is great when you need to keep tabs on the kids when they are not skating.
