Veterinarian Recommendations
   #24021 - 01/23/06 10:55 AM

Any recomendations for a local veteranian or any to stay away from? My aging cat is feeling under the weather and I need to get her checked out. I've had some bad experiences in the past so I'd feel better having some sort of recommendation. Thanks in advance.

All I can tell you is my experience. I had a very old dog, Monty. When he got sick my Vet did everything they could and keep him comfortable. When he could no longer be comfortable they helped me let him go. The kindness and compassion they showed was wonderful. An other story different dog, Oddie. My son's dog became ill. He took it to the Vet. The Vet started treatment, the other Vet in the practice told him to just put the dog to sleep. I talked to him and it was decided to try to save the dog. (Kidney failure) Well its been 4+ years and Oddie is the best looking "dead" dog I've ever seen. Imagine my surprise to discover the Vet that said he would try is now with my Vet's office. Who are these nice people? Animal Hospital of Collin County 972/727-2687.

Good luck wiht your cat, I know how you feel.

I highly recommend Dr. Ali and his staff at Alma Animal Hospital. Until last year we had three dogs. Our oldest dog was 17 and became very ill. We had made the decision to never let him suffer but it did not make it any easier when the time came. Dr. Ali and his staff were so compassionate and gave us as much time as we needed with him. One of his assistants even sat and cried with us and held our hands. A week later Dr. Ali called to see how we were holding up. He assured us that we did the right thing and that we had been good doggie parents. We were very touched and comforted by their kindness. These are wonderful caring people and great with our "youngsters" too! He calls them his babies! They also have a great groomer on staff! I hope your cat feels better soon! Their number is 972-747-9700.

I highly recommend Dr. Overton's office on Main next to Braums and in the same strip center as the Crazy Tomato. They aren't quick to jump in and run a bunch of tests and just run up expense if they aren't certain it's really necessary. I think it's called Allen Veterinary Clinic...but I never can remember I just know where the building is. Dr. Overton learned after college under another Vet I know that is one of the most respected Vets in the business and he recommended Dr. Overton to me.

I second the recommendation of Dr. Overton. I have been taking my dog to him for the last 4 years and he and his staff are top notch, and the best thing is he's an AGGIE. The name of his practice is Allen Veterinary Hospital, 972-727-8383.

I have used Dr, Overton for 17 years that I have lived in Allen. I just lost my dog Molly [old age] and Tigger [old age] with in several weeks of each other. The compassion he has for the aminals and the family are wonderfull. DR.Overton is a great vet in my books.

I highly recommend Dr. Overton as well. When my son was young he had pet rats. One of them became ill and my son kept asking me to take it to the dr. I didn't even know that vets treated rats (I mean, they're rats!) But, I called Dr. Overton and he said to bring the rat in. He really went above and beyond the call of duty to save that poor little rat. And, when he couldn't he and his staff were so sensitive toward my son and really helped in his greiving process. (And, through the whole process I kept thinking in the back of my mind, "ok, people, you do know this is a rat!?") We've taken our animals to Dr. Overton ever since.

I also recommend Dr. Overton's office. We have taken both our dogs there since we moved to Allen almost 2 years ago and the staff there is wonderful. We have even been able to call Dr. Overton on his cell phone on a Sunday when our English Bulldog was having a really hard time breathing and he explained some things we could do to try and help him and was very supportive.
There's also another vet there that we sometimes work with, but I can't think of his name at the moment.

I have to add another recommendation for Dr. Overton.

I had two cats that were playing and chasing each other across the street when they were hit by a car. One died, but the other one, still living, was suffering with a broken jaw and a bottom lip that was basically ripped off the bone and hanging under what chin there was.
I took him into Dr. Overtons and he patched him up and called me in to take a look...I was surprised to see a shirt button on my Simons chin! Dr. Overton had taken a button off of his shirt and sewn it on to Simons chin to support the bone and hold the lip on.
I recently took my youngest cat into his office with a dislocated toe, he wasn't there, but I loved the service we got from the staff. A younger man, who'd recently had surgery on his hand and was still in a cast, took her and was promptly mauled by her. He kind of laughed it off and was still just as gentle and patient with her as if she were a baby.

Both my husbands family and mine, have taken all our pets to him for, at least, the last 25 years.

Hmmm, I may still take the new puppy there in spite of that. Better than a Tech alum, I suppose.

Ditto on the recommendations for Dr. Overton. He and his staff are wonderful. Dr. Pace used to be with his office and has a "just cats" office in McKinney now. I don't do cats, but she seemed very nice when I met her with Dr. Overton.

We aboslutely LOVE Dr. Overton and his staff. My dog get's excited when we go there. She loves him, too. Cost for an office visit is great and he never gives up on your pet. You couldn't do better than his office.

We've been taking our pets to Dr. Overton for many years too. My family took our pets to him way back in the 1980's. I have to say that everything said here about him and his staff is true. Dr. Coffman (the younger vet) is also very good and just as compassionate. I took my young cat in a few weeks ago because he was displaying behavior of having a UTI. Dr. Coffman had to take a urine sample and the cat was not too thrilled, but let him do it. After putting him back into his kennel, my cat peed all over himself and Dr. Coffman came back in the room to help clean him up - not the most pleasant smelling thing to do. He did tell my cat that it would have been much simpler if he had done that before having to stick the needle in him!

We had two elderly dogs that we've had to put to sleep (at different times - first was about five years ago and the second was in December 2004 - both due to old age and not being able to walk) under their care and they were wonderful both times. They let us stay in the room as long as we needed even though they had patients waiting. I think the people there knew what was going on and probably didn't mind.

My dogs actually like going to the vet. They walk right in without hesitation. We took our yellow lab to him a couple weeks ago about a cut on his foot. Our basset hound wouldn't move away from the van so we could back out of the driveway so we took her for a "happy visit". They didn't have any trouble with her tagging along and took the time to give her a little attention too.

We have also taken our dogs to Dr. Wilson's office - Collin County Hospital for treatment when Dr. Overton's office was booked up and we needed to get our dog in ASAP to see a vet due to an ear infection. I thought they were very good at that office too, but we still use Allen Veterinary Hospital for our regular pet care needs.

Last summer we boarded our dogs out at Lucas Veterinary Hospital because we waited too long to decide to go on vacation and Dr. Overton was booked up. We thought the vet and staff out there gave our dogs excellent care while we were gone. The vet came out and told us that our dogs did very well.
