Speaking of confusion - I am confused about when to apply week pre-emergent (corn gluten meal). Since everything is already starting to bloom, should I put it down now, or wait until later in the month? Even with the confusion, I am loving this weather!!

Myra - I was at Neil Sperry's landscaping school last week and someone was asking about when to cut back their roses since they already have spring growth due to all this warm weather. He said to go ahead and do it now even though they may even be blooming. They will bounce back and bloom next month. I am going to cut mine back in a couple days and it already has new growth. A friend of mine said hers already has buds on it.
rockettmom - Now would be a the time to apply that corn gluten meal. If you wait any longer with all this warm weather, it will be too late.

To be honest with you we started pruning ours back after that really cold snap in November. I also prune all summer long. Like if I cut a rose for a vase I will cut it like I would for pruning and I have NEVER killed a rose bush yet.
However Antique roses aren't pruned like hybrid teas. Also I don't have to worry about the pruning at a 45 degree angle above a eye node. I just kinda give them a military haircut.

The only rose I have is Belinda's Dream - one of the EarthKind Roses. It is very similar in that it only needs pruning in the winter and again a light pruning in August. Otherwise, very little deadheading, no spraying at all and really doesn't need much fertilizer at all. Just mulch and water is all it needs to keep it alive and even the water can be minimal. I like roses that don't need a lot of care - like the antique roses, this one is very easy to take care of.
Speaking of what is blooming, I was looking at my garden and my verbena is blooming. My four nerve daisy has been blooming on and off through the winter and has several flowers right now and lots of buds ready to open. I even saw a couple blooms on one of my autumn sage plants the other day. My snowdrops that I planted in the fall are blooming too. And of course, my daffodils have been blooming for over a week now. They're just getting started.
