Early enrollement - AISD
   #24338 - 02/03/06 06:44 PM

Does anyone know the early admission requirements for AISD, if this is even an option? My daughter won't be 5 until December but she's already reading at K-1st level and her school teaches at the kindergarten level already.

Others will know more than I do but I've known a few friends to go through it and because Kindergarten is not mandatory in Texas there is no early enrollment for kindergarten. You would have to wait and have her test for early enrollment into 1st grade.

I know it might be expensive but have you thought about private school for a couple of years? That's what a friend of mine did, when she put him in public school they took him at his grade level from private school.

I agree with Ms Alyce about private school. About 8 years ago I had my kids enrolled in Hunter Glen's private school and I really liked how they taught their pre-school and kindergarten and it was really expensive. One thing to consider that I wished I had, was the maturity level versus the intelluctual ability. From personal experience I wish I would not have allowed my child to move forward a whole grade. There are many things they are exposed to later that they are just not ready for emotionally and due to their maturity level may not be ready for the responsibilites in the higher grades. However, with that said, EVERY child is different :).

Is Kindergarten not a requirement in Texas? I didn't know that. I thought it was a district by district decision but really didn't do any research. Does that just mean you can send your child anywhere for Kindergarten or nowhere at all and just start 1st grade. Can a child be held back in Kindergaten? Just curious - me and some other new moms were talking and wondering. Thanks for any insight. :)

Kindergarten is not required in Texas, BUT if you enroll and start school you MUST continue to attend. This includes the Pre-K programs the district offers. A parent can be cited for truancy if the child does not attend continue to attend school.

I am not an expert but here is my understanding of the law about kindergarten in Texas. The school is required to offer it. You as a parent are not required to send your child. You can skip it and put your child directly into first grade. You as a parent also have the option of waiting until your child is 6 before starting kindergarten. Yes a child can be held back in kindergarten. It is not all that uncommon.

On the subject of early admission. I do not believe the schools will budge at all on admitting children who are not 5 by September 1st. I also do not think they will enroll a child in first grade who is not 6 by September 1st. Personally I would not try to move a child ahead. My daughter's birthday is June 29th, she is now in 2nd grade. She taught herself to read at 4 and tests very well on standardized tests. However, I have found that she suffers a little bit from being on the young end of the class. She has trouble paying attention and finishing her work on time. I have also found that so many parents don't want their kids to be the youngest in the class that many if not most parents hold their summer birthday children back a year. My daughter has kids 14 or more months older than her in her class. A child with a December birthday will be 18 or more months younger than many children in their class. I would think that they would have problems socially. From a purely selfish standpoint, if you put your daughter ahead a year in school that is one less year you get to keep her at home with you.

I would completely agree with this. From my personal experience as being a child that was enrolled early...it was by far the worst decision my parents could of made and they agree in retrospect. I was always the youngest in my class which is a silly thing but when you are a kid it isn't that silly (there were kids in the grade below me, which should have been my grade level and they were older than me). The maturity level was not there as well as the entire learning process was a challenge for me.

Did you ever wish that your parents held you back a year later on? We are thinking of doing that this year. We have been struggling with the maturity issue for a couple of years now and the issues being faced at a young age. The age difference is anywhere from 1 to 2 years and now at an older age is a big deal. This is also the first year that an 'F' has ever appeared on the report card, yet intellectually the ability is there. The state we were in tested my child with the results of 2nd grade level at the age of 5 and did a placement of 1st grade. Also, an early learning start, knew ABCs/123s at 12 mos and could recognize 3 letter words. At 18 mos was reading 1st grade books and the newspaper by 3 yrs. Knowing the ability but seeing all the struggles, keeps pointing to immaturity as the problem.

As a parent of a 9th grader, I can tell you that this is the year that many of the parents who did not hold back their children wish that they did. 9th grade is the beginning of the years where grades count. Many of the younger students fall behind because they are struggling with the social issues that come from lack of maturity. I know of five moms who have confessed to wishing they had held back their sons in kindergarten. One of the biggest concerns for the boys is their size. In 9th grade, you can have boys that are over 6 feet tall and others that are barely over 5 feet. Many of these shorter boys come from families whose parents are average or even tall. They haven't gone through their growth spurt yet. These boys struggle because they feel inferior and some quit sports altogether. Anyway, just my two cents. I would not hesitate to do it again. I couldn't imagine sending a 17 year old off to college.

There are a lot of issues on the table in this thread. District policy, anecdotal experiences of individual parents and individual children, and different rates of social, emotional, and intellectual maturation.

With a December birthday (your daughter's situation), I started school at age 5 and graduated when I was 17 and did fine. It was not always easy, but I found friends and a "place" in the school. I was a year "late" getting a driver's license and 17 was way too young to be heading off to college - but again, I survived.

All those many years ago, there were virtually no options for accelerated instruction beyond skipping grades. This is no longer the case. I would schedule an appointment right now with the campus principal of the elementary school in your attendance zone. Talk to him/her about your concerns and you will get the best information in return about what differentiated services the district can offer - still allowing your child to be served at grade level - where her emotional and social skills may make her more comfortable.

December is pretty late. My personal opinion is that the better balance may be to leave your daughter in preschool until she is the normal age to start and work with her kindergarten teacher to provide differentiated instruction as needed when she gets there.

Kindergarten and first grade are not such a tough ride. But the world of adolescents and young adults is increasingly sophisticated and complex - with dark influences competing against your teaching and values for their attention. I would have to be convinced there were no better options for accelerated instruction before I would deliberately throw a child into the deep end of that pool.

When you have exhausted all possibilities, remember this - you haven't.
