Citizens have notified the Dallas Police Department's Swindle Squad of a possible scam involving "free" gift certificates. Citizens have reported receiving phone calls from an individual who states that they have won gift certificates from Lowes and/or Home Depot in the sum of $200.00. The caller then solicits bank account information from the citizen so that the certificates may be deposited into their account.
Remember that you should never give out identifying information such as pin numbers, account numbers, drivers' license or social security numbers over the phone. Call corporate offices in your area to verify the truthfulness of the call. Do not trust calling the original solicitor back on any number he has given you because he may have set up an intricate, yet false, answering system that supports his claims with non-existent secretaries and fake voice mail boxes.
Remember, when things appear too good to be true they often are.
