Feeling bad for the Pluckers thread, so here goes a Torchy's Tacos thread. This is one I am happy we are getting. Hopefully we have enough UT alums to keep it going. Hijacked Pluckers Thread |

Green chile pork tacos are awesome. Also some of the best guacamole I've ever had.

I just got a card in the mail today about Torchy's Tacos. It looks like it's going in the old Tin Star location. I'm sure many of my more parochial neighbors will boycott the place for its cute demon logo, but for us more reasonable folk, the menu looks great and the attitude looks even better! I can't wait to try it out!

They posted remodeling pictures on their Facebook and said "next week". So the 11th sounds about right as said above |

Hey old morman neighbor. You calling us out? We common southern baptist church goers like little devils too! ;) Hah! You caught me. Actually, the logo reminded me of an old story of a Unix conference that was held in Texas years ago. A woman was wearing a T-shirt with the BSD Unix logo on it, which is also a cute demon, but in sneakers. She got in trouble at one of the local BBQ joints; the locals didn't take too kindly to someone wearing "the Prince of Darkness, especially when he's looking so darn friendly". On Topic: I can't wait to try out Torchy's "Diablo" sauce! Habaneros FTW!

They are now open. Went for lunch today. Very similar to Fuzzy's Taco's and just as expensive. Everything was good but it's hard to justify paying $3-$4 per taco. Our lunch came out to $22 for 4 tacos, chips and salsa and one drink. More than I usually like spending on a lunch break for 2. They are also open at 7am for breakfast tacos so I think I'll be picking some up very soon. |

I so agree with you. We also tried it today - close your eyes and you are in Taco Cabana, Fuzzy's or any one of a bunch of others. It was good but over priced compared to El Grande Burrito or Chito's and not as good. |

Food is such a passion of mine that I just don't see price when I go out to eat. Yet regardless of price, these tacos were totally worth it. I started off with guacamole and chips. It really was an exemplary guacamole, bursting with fresh avocado and lime flavors as well as perky onions. It was a great combination of textures, with rustic chunks of avocado suspended in a smooth purée—dusted with queso fresco. The Holy Diver taco featured achiote shrimp, grilled. It came with onions escabeche, jalapeños, queso fresco, and cilantro. The briny shrimp gushed with flavor and balanced well with mild achiote. The bright pickled onions provided both eye-opening flavor and a pleasing crunch. A quick squeeze of a wedge of lime woke up the entire taco. The Brush Fire taco is Jamaican jerk chicken with mango, sour cream, cilantro, and a fiery diablo sauce. That sauce was not not just the bomb, it as a bomb! It had intense habanero flavor and a burn that opened wide my sinuses—yet not so hot that it hid habanero's characteristic flavors of apricot and vanilla. It worked beautifully with the spice-laden chicken. There are a lot of creative tacos on the menu, plus a burrito, market-style corn, and desserts. It even features breakfast tacos and traditional Mexican migas as early as 7am. I normally don't like "quick-casual" places, but the food was quite nice. I'll definitely give it another go.

Sean, don't take offense because I liked your review and it was very descriptive. But, what makes an onion "perky"? |

I agree..a bit overpriced. I had the pork tacos--a little dry and not much flavor. however, you can order a half order of the queso, so it's not that expensive. I'd order the queso again, but try a different taco. |

But, what makes an onion "perky"? I don't know. It seemed like an appropriate adjective at the time, but now I'm second guessing myself.Sorry!

I agree with Sean that the quality and flavor of the food is more important than price. I'd rather pay around $10 for a burger, fries and drink at Mooyah or Twisted Root than half that amount for a Big Mac combo at McDonalds. Taco Cabana has decent food, but it's essentially a fast food restaurant and Torchy's isn't. Torchy's also takes the menu to the next level with better quality ingredients and a bigger variety of options. I went Wednesday evening and had the Crossroads--well seasoned, moist chopped brisket with pico de gallo, avacado, jalapenos, grilled onions and jack cheese on a corn tortilla. It was excellent! I also tried the Street Corn, which was delicious and very different from the sides you'll find at other restaurants. It's grilled corn on the cob, which is then cut off the cob and topped with chipolte aioli, finely crumbled queso fresco, chili powder and fresh cilantro. This morning, I tried the Migas breakfast taco, which was fantastic as well. What I liked best is that it wasn't a pre-made set up--the egg was cooked fresh when I ordered it with the tortilla strips scrambled in. Torchy's sauces are really good too--flavorful and with a good kick of heat. I didn't really care for the Salsa Roja because it's got quite a bit of fresh lime juice, but that's just a personal preference. This is only the second Torchy's location in the DFW area--the first one is at Prestion and Forest, and literally has lines out the door at lunch. I had never tried it, but several of my co-workers just raved about how good it is. Now I can see what the fuss is about.

I had the Crossroads and Green Chile Pork tacos on Sunday and they were awesome. Torchy's was more expensive but the tacos are bigger so 2 filled me up instead of the usual 4 at other places. I'm glad they are here and hope they stay. |

We tried Torchy's last week with a large group. Everyone seemed more than satisfied. I had the Green Chili Pork and Dirty Sanchez (sorry but true) and liked both. Many in our group got the Fried Avacado taco and absolutely loved them. Even the sides were good. Hint to those with kids, they don't list kids options but do have them on request. Just ask at the checkout.

My husband and I finally had a chance to try this restaurant on Friday for lunch. He got the burrito and I got the green chile pork taco. Our food was awesome! We also had chips and salsa and tried the avocado sauce. It was really good too and you get a generous portion so you don't run out. |

I'm curious as to what you consider "tiny" - I've had Torchy's on a number of occasions and I would not consider them "small" at all. They're much bigger than true Mexican street tacos, but they're not supposed to be some kind of Cheesecake Factory huge, either. I guess size is relative. :) Brad |

Expensive yes, but I wouldn't say "tiny". I'm 240lbs and 2 tacos and splitting chips and salsa filled me up. |

The two I got looked like the furthest one. Both of them together did not even fill the blue platter. Must depend on which kind you order. Umm ok...valley girls. |

I smell a rat. And the two in my picture are the same size. The one in front is in the foreground, so it appears larger.

They really would be tiny if they stuffed three of them in one basket. Try exercising some reasoning power. I'm in the software business not the food service industry. And rats make damn fine pets. |

Today, we ate at Torchy's for the first time. I had the Chicken Fajita tacos, and Ms. CP had the beef and one other, I can't remember. Not bad at all! Chips and (red) salsa were great, too. I just have one suggestion. Unless the "unsweetened" tea is sweet and I didn't know it (since I didn't actually try it), I'd love to see sweet tea offered. And a GOOD sweet tea batch at that, like Cheddar's or Cotton Patch.

I'm sure they have sugar packets and other artificial sweeteners so you can add it to the tea to make it sweet to your taste. The unsweetened tea is just plain tea. I don't know why restaurants have to label it "unsweetened." It should be "tea" and "sweet tea." But that is a totally different topic . . . We have been to Torchy's on three different occasions and the food has always been very good. I like trying a different salsa each time. So far they have all been good choices. Also, speaking of soft drinks, their Maine Root Pink Lemonade is very tasty. |
