All the discussion in the news about Plano's proposed middle school grading policies got me thinking that Ford(and presumably Curtis and Ereckson) do it correctly. They don't generally enter zeros for homework because they don't give the kids the option of not doing it. If they don't have their assignments they stay after school for homework club (aka detention) and do the work. This gives the kids who just forgot or got too busy a second chance. It also teaches the kids who just blew it off that there are consequences for their actions and they don't get the option of just accepting a bad grade and moving on.

I'm all for giving kids a second chance and for making them learn the material. I'm not sure what the policy is on cheating (and my kids know I better not ever have to find out).

When my stepson was at Curtis (he's in 10th now), he didn't have the "stay after school" option; it was zeroes until he handed it in. Perhaps that was changed? But still.

I also love 'Scholarshop' at Ford where they can occasionally stay after school and get help if they need it without signing up for regular tutoring.

My understanding is that Curtis now has a similar policy to Ford. My daughter doesn't happen to have any friends at Ereckson but I would imagine they are all similar. I believe they do get docked a few points for the assignment being late but they don't get the option of just blowing it off.

My daughter goes to Ford. If she forgets her assignment or doesn't have it finished she calls me from class to tell me she has to stay for homework club. There was a note at the beginning of the year that gave options- either I could say she could stay after talking to me (that's what I said to make sure there wasn't confusion), or stay without notifying me. I believe the grade starts at a 70 for that assignment.
Also Scholar Shop is a great program as well, she can stay after school and get help with assignments if needed, they provide a snack. She likes to do that when she has homework, that way she gets home and is finished with it. I really think both of these are excellent ways to hold kids responsible and help them to be successful.
