I take volleyball pictures with my cannon xti and would like to invest in a good zoom lens. I need something that can handle the low light of gyms and warehouses and the fast action (high school level of play). Any recommendations? The typical lens I use is a 50mm f1.8.

Probably the best deal would be the Sigma 70-200 mm f2.8. While this is probably the best priced fast digital zoom, it still runs about $800. If you are seriously thinking about it, I would first see if you could rent or possibly borrow one and give it a try. I've shot basketball games in gymnasiums as well, although it was many years ago, and still had problems even with a 1.4 50mm lens due to lighting. Now, many things have changed since then, the first being better lighting! The second is available speed. Back then, the fastest I could shoot was ISO 400. I would suggest trying a minimum of ISO 1000. Fortunatly the Canon works well at high ISO.

When I'm shooting in a gym, I like to use a 70-200mm f/2.8 lens also. It has the reach and aperture I need. Depending on the camera, I can shoot at ISO 800 without the image being too grainy. If necessary, I process the image with imagenomic's Noisware software to get rid of some of the noise. Since gyms usually have terrible lighting, I also shoot in RAW mode so I can adjust the white balance as needed.
