I just got back from a "sister's reunion" with my 3 siblings. We try to get together every 1-2 years. Since both parents have passed away we try to keep in contact by meeting together every so often.
My younger sister was telling us a story about her middle daughter, Mallory. She is 14 and has a boyfriend.
One day my sister was to fill in for a girl at work from noon till five. (dental hygenist). She went down to the family room to tell Mallory about the chores she needed to do while she was at work. Mallory complained that she had plans with her boyfriend and my sister said the chores had to be done first.
My sister went back up stairs to find her cell phone chiming. She had a new text message that said, "I hate my mom".
She took her phone and flew back down the steps and asked Mallory if she meant to send her that text message. Mallory's jaw droopped to the ground. She had meant to text her boyfriend.
So, my sister told her she was grounded, could not see the boyfriend, and added extra chores to the list.
My sister took her cell phone back, turned to walk away but instead turned back to Mallory and said, "Next time you'd better slow down and check what you are sending to who so you keep yourself out of trouble.......That is, IMHO.....LOL".

Lesson learned albeit the hard way. Now how many of us have said "I hate my mom!"?

Wonder what would happen if mom shot back a text like "I know you feel that way now, but I will always love you."

A boyfriend at age 14? That'll big a larger problem than the texting.

I am not judging that. I was just always into heaping burning coals of kindness on the heads of those who misbehave - LOL.

Yes, I like your idea on the text back to them.
I had a similar situation three nights ago. My son was unaware I was already home and was quite loud on the phone. He was complaining to his friend about how hard I was on him (had just grounded him earlier in the day) and that I was "p'd off".
When he hung up, to his surprise I called him down. I told him that I didn't appreciate that language (words like p'd off and 'crap' aren't allowed by my kids in my house) and that he needed to have a more positive attitude and to see the better side of what happened to him; that in complaining he was having a bad attitude and putting himself in with the majority of people that like to complain a lot and blame others for their consequences. I told him I loved him, that I hated the fact he had to suffer consequences but that I do so because I love him, and that it's okay to be upset but to find other avenues to vent it. I finished by stating it was his personal phone conversation but that he should use better judgment in the future. (I'm sure next time he'll close the door and be more quiet!!!)
And yes, there were times I 'hated my dad' but as I grew more mature I realized just how much he loved me and I loved him.
Sorry to deviate about the 14 year-old having a boyfriend...that's a whole other topic!!!

That was a great conversation with your son. My daughter always thought I was dumber than a rock, had no appreciation for teenagers these days, and I made her life miserable because we had rules.
She is 19 now and I am hearing about how she had screwed up things in her teens, should have eaten better, handed her homework in like I said, not gotten irate when I wouldn't let her dye her hair blue, etc.
So I guess all that nagging and molding we try to do as parents does pay off at some point.
I also said I hated my mom when I was a teen, but I only told that to the dog.
