Hi,
Recently in Fry's I saw a product called a diplexer. So If I buy an off air antenna, can I combine the antenna + the directv into a diplexer at the attic and then at the tv end split using another diplexer so one cable goes to my directv box and then the tv and the other goes to my off air HD receiver and to the tv. Will this work?

If the picture I paint of the connection is correct it should (the signal splitting/combination part of it) but please check your HDTVs manual. Apparently combining such signals is what the diplexer was made for. It's very important to check your HDTVs manual especially if it's a different brand from that of the diplexer. Do you have the brand/model# of the diplexer you found?

I don't have the name of the diplexer. I saw it at Fry's and will look it up the next time I am there.
Any reccommendations for off-air antenna and receiver? Unfortunately the $70 HDTV receiver being offered by Radio Shack is no longer available.

Look to getting you a good recommendation on the antenna. What model of TV is it going to be used on?

According to what I hear Samsung makes some of the better products. Do you know the Samsung model that you have because Samsung has probably put out about 50 different TV models. The model number (e.g TR61X2) is usually located at the back of the TV where the barcode is. Sometimes it appears in front at one of the four corners of the TV set. Let me know.

Yes, the diplexers are designed to do just what you want - so you need two of them, one to merge the antenna and cable and another one to split them apart. Just a warning - since you are using DirecTv - the new DirecTV satellites which provide HD locals (the DFW ones started to become available in January) are not compatible with diplexing, so if you are getting the HD locals you will need to run a separate cable for the OTA signals from the antenna.
Any diplexers will do the job, you can get them for a few dollars although I usually play safe and spend $15 or so..

To add to that, sometimes the "DLP" might appear after "Samsung" making it seem as if DLP is the model number. It's actually the type of video technology inside of it. Look for a six digit model number : )

For getting a direct TV, wires would be directly connected to the TV from the Direct TV receiver. This wire should be also connected to the antenna.

If your TV is already equipped with a digital receiver, you should only need to connect directly to the TV. I get 60 channels roughly with my antenna, but the majority are Spanish and religious. The local network feeds are pretty amazing and the HD quality is equal to cable or Uverse. TWC told me the HD antenna signal had to be run from a separate cable to my Tivo. Fortunately, I had another cable wire running down the same wall so I can now record OTA and cable feeds at the same time.
