Yesterday we received Progress reports home in our folders from school. I have a concern and that is that since there is only one week left in the six weeks isn't it a little late to be sending home? I have a son whose A grades took a deep nose dive and I do not see how that is recoverable with only one week left in the grading period.
I have asked for a conference to see how I can keep better track of what is going on at school. I do check the Skyward Family Access but that is only as good as the info put into the system and with busy teachers it isn't always kept up to date.
I guess my main question is why are we getting progress reports so late? Any ideas?

We got ours (Story 6th grade) a couple of weeks ago.
Could it be that it just didn't get taken home right away?

I have two boys who received them this thursday. So it must be that our school sent them out later. I did notice that on the Family Access it showed December 4th as being end of Progress Report 3. So that only leaves 2 weeks before the end of the term.

This six weeks really has just 5 weeks in it. So it appears most schools sent out the progress reports as if it were a true 6 weeks.

The schedule this year is a little weird. They wanted to get the semester in before winter break which made two of the 6 week periods really only 5 weeks. They figured the grades at the end of the 3rd week but for the schools that send home printed progress reports they went home in the folders whatever day they usually go home the next week which could be as late as Thursday. I agree it is kind of pointless because there is no time to make up for any earlier mistakes. The grades should have been available on Skyward at the end of the 3rd week (which is still too late but a little better.) The only thing I can suggest is to communicate with your child's teacher, check the papers that come home, and check the Skyward system. You can also set the Skyward system to send you email updates (but as you said if the teacher hasn't entered the grades in the system that won't help much.) Personally I think any dramatic drop should prompt an email to the parent right away but the teachers don't always do that.
Just remember that the overall semester grade is what's important. What gets printed on the 6 week report card isn't all that significant.

I completely agree that the overall important grade is the semester grade. I have an email in with the teacher and hope to be able to find out where my son really stands with his grades. Unfortunately, there has been a lack of communication. Skyward Family Access has no grades for this particular class and I have not heard a thing from the teacher until receiving the Progress Report. It has been a lesson for me and how it will be up to me to communicate with his teacher on a much more regular basis. I guess I would have hoped that when an "A" the previous two reporting periods drops down to a very low "F" that I would have been notified a little sooner. Hopefully my son will learn a big lesson with this situation.

It could be that the teacher hasn't finished inputting grades. One of my son's teachers NEVER puts in grades til the end of the 6 weeks - just puts in all the assignments, quizzes and tests with 0s. Makes it difficult for us and for him since he has to prove eligibility to participate in band and has to go and get a note from this teacher every 3 weeks...by the way the lowest grade he's ever gotten in this class - once the grades were input - was a B. Skyward is a wonderful tool and I was hoping that there would be some consistent enforcement/guidelines but so far it's just like ParentConnect in that it's only as useful as the information that's input.

I'm with you on that one. I would be screaming bloody murder. There is no point in having a parent communication system if it isn't updated in some semblance of a timely manner. A drop like that should have been a red flag that prompted an email or a phone call. I would guess that for a grade to be that low there had to be some missing assignments. Hopefully your son is in elementary or middle school and you can all learn from the experience without it affecting his transcript.

Yes, on the progress report it does state incomplete assignments. I will be at school tomorrow to speak with the teacher and see where his grades actually stand and what he needs to still get in. I truly do understand that the teachers are busy especially at this time of year, but I do wish something had been communicated a little earlier than a week before report cards. My son is still in elementary fortunately and I don't have to worry about grades that could affect him getting in college. I was just surprised that we received his progress report so late into the grading period and not even a note or email letting me know what was going on with his grades. Tomorrow will tell me if my son will live to see another day or not

I appreciate everyones input into my situation. I spoke with my sons teacher today and all is well. It just happened to be a lag in time and late assignments. I can now breath a sigh of relief and get back to enjoying the season.

There is a real problem with the notification system. Some teachers are on the ball with getting grades in quickly and others not so much.
It renders the system useless since I don't know whether to praise the kid or take priviledges away.
