I just saw this today on the internet. Anyone know anything about it? My computer is several years old and I don't have microsoft office on it and didn't want to spend the $$$ to download it so I just limp along. Just wondered if this has bugs, is no good, or just what it is all about. Thanks

From my personal experience I would avoid it. It is easy enough to use for a word processor, but if you are trying to work with a word doc I have had nothing but problems. I finally ended up picking up a copy of MS Office at Sam's Club.

I don't have Microsoft Office 2007. The computer is rather old. I downloaded a free trial of Office awhile ago but then didn't purchase it.I'd rather spend the money toward a new computer. Sometimes people send me stuff in "Outlook" and I can't open it. I had never heard of openoffice.org. and just was looking for feedback before looking into it any further. Just curious.

Some people use and like OpenOffice a lot. It has been around a long time, and has as good a reputation as anything in the free software world. It is probably the most prominent Office-compatible word processor package for Linux.
I've looked at it, but haven't used it much. On the one Linux system I played with, I thought the fonts were hard to read and the resulting documents a little ugly, at least on-screen. That may have been a feature of that particular Linux system. I didn't beat it hard enough to test its Office compatibility.
Since it doesn't cost anything to try, I suggest you give it a run.
Another Office compatibility approach is to download the appropriate file viewers from Microsoft. You won't be able to create or edit documents, but you can at least look at the Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files that someone sends you.
Two plus two equals five, for sufficiently large values of two.

Thanks for the help! Although I have come a long way since my typewriter/calculator upbringing, it still gets confusing for me at times. Now I have to deal with iPods and iPhones! I will give your suggestions a try!

I had my wife use OpenOffice for a couple years and it worked for everything she needed until she started editing the newsletter for the organization she volunteers for. Office is a much better fit for that. But the latest OpenOffice can open and work with most word docs. It does not have anything like Outlook though, just things that can replace Word, Excel and PowerPoint. I have used OpenOffice on Windows, Mac and Linux. I love the fact that it works on all three.

A few months ago I bought a new laptop and didn't want to spend the additional for MS Office. I downloaded open office instead. It works great. I use the word processor and the spreadsheet regularly with no complaints. It works on all the Word and Excel documents I already have or receive from someone else. Unless you need some power-user feature that's not included (I haven't yet.) go ahead and try it. There's no reason to buy what's available for free.
