FYI to all Sloan Creek Middle School and Lovejoy HS Freshman Parents - All students are now required to take 4 math courses to receive a diploma. With the acceleration of math within the District, this places many students taking Pre AP Calculus in 12th grade. This is an excellent college preparation, but may not be the track for all students. If your student is strong in English and the Arts, he or she may struggle in math. This may create needs for extensive tutoring both in and out of school. I wanted all parents to be aware that the District does offer a course between Alg 1 and Alg 2 called Mathematical Models. It is an approved TEA course for graduation, but is not listed in the Lovejoy Course Guide. For this reason, many parents may not be aware of its existence. This course could be very valuable for students struggling in Alg 1 or even Geometry. It bridges the gaps and reinforces the concepts in these two courses. That would help some students complete HS by taking Alg2 as their final math. I wanted you to be aware of this, if your counselor has not mentioned the course to you. See the TEA website for math requirements in Texas. http://ritter.tea.state.tx.us/rules/tac/chapter111...

That is good to know. It's weird that if they offer it they don't list it in the catalog. According to the counselor I spoke with in Allen there are options in the 12th grade year other than AP Calculus. They offer regular calculus, statistics, and dual credit college algebra. (Yes I am a psycho parent that actually asked that question even though my kid is just entering Lowery next year.) I wonder if Lovejoy will end up offering those classes.

All on level classes at Lovejoy are Pre AP. You can take AP Statistics but that is the only other choice if you are to the Calculus level.

I would love to see statistics replace calculus as the default advanced math - it has much more practical value in the real world.
Nothing to do with LISD or AISD, just my personal bias.

Especially for journalists! :)
We talked our son into taking AP statistics at AHS (in addition to calculus), but it didn't go well. The teacher had issues and left before the end of the year, and a replacement couldn't be found. The class was surprisingly unmotivated for an AP class, which may have contributed to the teacher's woes. I think a lot of kids took it for the AP GPA bonus but didn't really want to learn anything.
We ended up bribing my son with an expensive kitten to do the self-study needed to pass the AP test.
I'm in favor of teaching statistics early and often, but getting qualified instructors is critical for success.
Two plus two equals five, for sufficiently large values of two.
