Hey guys:
Question about "Texas Law."
My In-Laws live in East Texas. They found a teacup Chiuaua (sp) and we rescued him from them.
The little guy had not been physicaly abused, but has obviously been enotionally abused....frightened to move....terrified of men--clearly this little 2 pound guy had been at least verbally abused by men.
Now, the in-laws say the "owners" have advertised and want him back.
What does the law say? Can we say "to heck with you?" to the red-necks who want him back?

I'm not sure there is a Texas law, but did hear that Dallas city just passed such a measure.

I don't think I'd keep someone else's dog on such speculation as "verbally abused"...
My dogs act like a whiny little teat around little children, and we have no little children around them to abuse them in any way...our little dachshund sits and vibrates like the world is coming to an end when small children visit on occasion.
I sure wouldn't want someone to keep my dogs.

I know you are trying to do the right thing, but a couple of thoughts on it.
1) I fear reading a dogs body language and summing it up to abuse may not be the best defense to knowingly keeping someone's pet.
2) If you do plan to keep the dog, maybe posting about the specifics on an open forum like this isn't the best plan either.
I know you want what is best for the dog, so good luck in your decision process.

There IS a TEXAS law. It is a civil tort called.... THEFT BY CONVERSION or simply "conversion". Dallas may have passed something pertaining to dogs or similar chattel but conversion is conversion whether it be tools, dogs, cars or cats.

Yeah. We are going to give him back to the owners.
Never really any doubt about that.
I know I would be upset if someone kept one of our other dogs!
Took the dogs owners two weeks to put an ad in the paper though! Also, they apparently never reported him missing to the pound.
Oh well, back he goes to the "Deliverance" folks this weekend.
Luckily, I will not be there, or else I would tell the owners:
1) Register him with the city...he was not registered, we checked and they had no record of such a dog that had been reported lost.
2) Cut his nails! They were so long he was having difficulty walking.
3) Get him his shots (next year, we had him vaccinated). Although wearing a ratty collar, he had no vaccination tags. Lucky the pound in "podunk Texas" where he was found did not get their hands on him.
4) Get him "fixed!" He has not been altered and that might be why he ran away...smelled a female.
Ahhh......venting over. I feel better now.

Shoulda kept him, just by the description of the state he was found in, you'd be offering the dog a much better life. Those people don't sound responsible enough to own a dog.

Tough decision Aolain, I hope the owners don't let your good deed go to waste.

Well, the plot thickens!
I tried to call the owner, and I get a recording "the mobile number is no longer in service."
So, not to be deterred, I called the local paper, found the disconnected number is the one of record.
I am putting a "found" ad in the local paper..perhaps the owners will see it. I am now having these visions of a little old granny pinning away for her little pet!
At this point, I think I have done all I can do.
