Art treasure stolen from library. A 2,500 pound bronze sculpture was removed from the library’s courtyard on Wednesday, June 9. This work of art depicting a child seated on a bench reading a book was a prominent feature that appealed to both children and adults. Purchased for $3,000 an estate auction in 2003 by the Friends of the Allen Public Library, it was placed to promote childhood literacy and children were often seen reading to the figure.
Allen Public Library cofounder Wilma Smith declares, “I have a friend who takes her granddaughters to the Library on a weekly basis -- they have named the little boy "Tommy" for a friend and would sit and read to him as they left the Library. I am certain they are not the only children who do a similar thing as I see children sitting with him as I go and come from the Library. He was regarded as a "friend" from the Library.”
A reward is being offered for any information leading to its return.

Yes sad indeed that these things are targeted just as grave markers are. Tom or Library rep I'm sending a PT to consider.

What's bronze going for per ounce these days? That's a brazen way to make some cash.

I don't know, but it's certainly a nationwide problem with some of these metals. Hopefully the metal recyclers are savvy enough to check for maker's marks and numbers.

I noticed a few weeks ago that it was leaning like part of it was broken. That is terrible!

Wow. I can't believe someone would do that. I don't know why stuff like this amazes me, but it just does.

Close as I can figure it's going for $ 1.50 -$1.70 a pound as scrap. Depends on the alloy.

They found the statue in Dallas, from the sound of it, it's in pretty rough shape.
