So, who will gain the GOP nomination (or at least be a serious contender during the primaries) for president in 2012?
Mitt Romney?
Jeb Bush?
Jendal (sp?)
Palin?
Michele Bachmann?
Rick Perry?
Somebody else?
Further,
1) what would be the "best" ticket (pres. and VP) to actually win the White House?
2) what would be the most interesting to watch?
3) What potential ticket would be a disaster?

How many were giving Obama a real chance at this time in 06?

Mitt reminds people of the guy that laid them off.
Jeb is Jeb. The Bush Stigma is too fresh.
Palin is a fundraiser and crowd warmer.
Perry is an idiot.
Jendal....maybe....has a chance
I'd put Ryan right up there with those guys.

LOL.. in 06 I doubt anyone thought of Obama as a serious candidate.
Perry may be an idiot, but he is a tireless campaigner...he knows how to craft his message to the group being addressed. I would think he would have a shot at the nomination.
A Perry-Jendal ticket?
A Perry-Palin ticket?
A Palin-Bachman ticket? (this one would be interesting to watch).
Who are some other unknowns out there within the GOP?

I give Perry about 1 chance in a trillion.
Obama is more likely to say he was born in Kenya that Perry to get the nomination.

Yes, if it was Palin, that would be the only glimmer Obama would have of winning re-election. She's good for the Republicans as being a crowd favorite but she won't be the nominee. I'd just like to see a serious third party candidate come into play and shock both parties.

I think pup is on to something with Paul Jr. Or Romney w/Palin. If Obama could get elected it keeps any of these long shots from seeming far fetched.

I like Eric Cantor. Maybe not for 2012, but he'll run one day, and he'll win.

Ouch! I remember when Pat Paulson ran! Yikes!
I think a "Palin" ticket could easily win the GOP nomination. The base loves her. the "Old Guard" might resist, but in the end, it will be up to the common GOP primary voter to decide.
I think there might be some problems winning the general election. Still, I think if the cards fell right, she could be the next president.

I agree with Maurice. Palin will not even be considered.
I like Pawlenty and Jendal, but don't know if it's their time.
It's going to be difficult to find the one who has that "it" factor to win.

I've been away from the forums fort quite a while, but something here kind of stood out to me. No one mentioned Newt Gingrich. Is he no longer a force in the GOP? I agree with him seldom, but tend to think he is very intelligent and when he says something I have confidence he really believes it.
Personally, I'd like to see a ticket of Palin/Perry. Can't think of anything that would be more of a guarantee for the Democrats (Obama, or just about anyone) to remain in the White House.

I AM/WAS "the base" and I despise Romney, and Perry. I don't despise Palin but I don't think she can get elected and neither can Jeb Bush.
Gingrich/Jendal might work!

Palin/Perry?
heheheh. The Democratic Party's dream ticket.
Funny thing though, in politics anything is possible, I think if the cards fell right, Palin could be elected.
Think about it. The republican base will vote for whomever the party puts up. The Tea Party will certainly not rally around a Dem, and Palin is the darling of the Tea Party.
Further, the Republican base and the members of the Tea Party are motivated and energized. They are sure to come out en mass if circumstances are right.
Anything can happen politically, so a Palin/Perry ticket could, under certain circumstances, win.
