I am putting together a slide show and trying to scan pictures that I don't have in a digital format. I scanned them once before but when I put them into the slide show, they were blurry. I figured I needed to scan them at a higher resolution. So, I scanned one of the photos at 4800 ppi in jpeg format and it created a HUGE file - 1.5 gb. So, knowing that I obviously don't need the pictures to be that big, so what is the minimum size I can make them and still have a clear, crisp image for the slide show?

How big are the originals? How are you planning to present them, Digital projector or computer monitor? What program are you using to organize and display the slide show?

I would think that a 600 DPI scann would be fine for most things. I think that anything above 600 dpi is actually an interpolation for most scanners anyway.

I'd make sure that you are using at least a 16 bit color depth.

After you scan the photo and look at it on screen, look closely the original to verify that the resolution of the scanned photo matches what you see in the original. I've been disappointed in some enlarged images made from high resolution scans of photos, but when I looked closely at the original, I realized that the original was fuzzy too. Some software may let you sharpen a fuzzy photo a little.

See . . . I knew you would ask the right questions to figure all this out. The originals are 4"x6". We're putting it together on our computer and it will be projected onto a big screen when the laptop is hooked up to a projector at the church onto two screens on either side of the chapel. We're using Pinnacle Studio 12 to create the slide show. I'm using an HP2400 printer/scanner/copier to scan the photos. I'll scan a few at 600 to see what the quality is in the slide show. When I originally scanned them, it defaulted to 200, so I'm sure that is why they were blurry when I inserted them into the frames. This thing is turning into something that is very time consuming. I was signed up to take a free class to learn the Pinnacle program, but ended up having a minor surgery that day because the doctor had to reschedule it from earlier in the week. So, I'm learning this software on my own by trial and error. I'm glad there are people here who can give me tips about getting these photos scanned properly.

Does it need to be an unattended presentation.... one where you press go? Or one that has music or narration?

I usually do my presentations in MS PowerPoint. You can hit a space bar to advance to the next slide. However, PowerPoint doesn't really do sound.

Have you examined the digitized scans on the computer monitor? Are you sure that Pinnacle Studio isn't fuzzing up the photos? I had Pinnacle Studio 8 a long time ago.

Windows Movie Maker is another option for you. I think it's a free download. My sister uses it all the time for slide shows with music that she burns to DVD. They always come out nice and you don't need a 600ppi photo for it.

Powerpoint, as said, works well too. You can set it for click to advance or automatic. And you can set it to music but PPT can be picky when it comes to audio.

It is the kind that we would just start and it would run on its own. The pictures that are in a digital format either that were taken with a digital camera or ones that were film that when I developed them I had digitized were fine. That is why I thought it was the resolution of the scanned photos that was the problem.

I was going to use the Microsoft Movie Maker download, but my husband wanted to buy the Pinnacle thing so that is what I'm currently working with, but may switch if this doesn't work with the higher resolution photos.

I'm going back through the stack of photos to re-scan them today and will try inserting them back into the program this weekend and will let you know how it looks. Hopefully a lot better than the first time.

Seems to me a free download would be easier than rescanning a bunch of photos. But that's just me.

It probably would be easier if we were starting from scratch, but we have most of the slide show set up already and it is just the pictures in the first part that needed to be redone.

We were gone over the weekend and I have not yet been back to scanning the pictures. The few I did re-scan haven't been inserted back into the show yet. I'll let you know.

I told my husband about the Microsoft Movie Maker and it turns out we already have that on our pc! Wish I had known! I told him I was really frustrated with the Pinnacle product and wanted to start over. I opened up the MMM and it is so much easier! Then he tells me that the reason he BOUGHT the Pinnacle product was to convert some old home movies to DVD format. What a waste of time it was trying to get that to work when I had a user friendly software already loaded on the pc!

Glad to hear that it's working out. I bought an early version of Pinnacle a long time ago. It an impressive set of features. However, it was buggy and would crash. They abandoned the version that I had, so I had to PAY to upgrade to their new supported version. It had more features (many I didn't use), and was still buggy. They eventually dumped that version and wanted me to PAY AGAIN to upgrade. I dumped them and moved to Adobe Premier Elements. It does some things really well. I've tinkered a little with the free Microsoft product and it seemed fine.

Here is some tips to keep the process smooth.

Focus on your final resolution. If it for a computer monitor you might be looking at 1280 -1600 pixel resolution. If it is for a projector it might be 800 pixels.

Let's use 1600 pixels for fun.
So if you have a 4x6" photo - you need roughly a 300 dpi scan (300 dpi x 6" = 1800 dots or pixels) to full frame the image. If you are scanning an 8"x10" photo then it would require 200 dpi scanning portrait or 150 dpi landscape.

Keeping the resolution down on the photo scans will make the system running the movie moving along at a good clip and you will have fewer memory freezes.

I am just about done with the slide show I put together on Microsoft Movie Maker. It is really neat. I used the "Star Wars" theme for the beginning with scrolling text (husband and boys are "Star Wars" fans), then for the last part, I used "Find Your Wings" by Mark Harris. I also used different transitions between the photos and have some of the photos where it moves in or moves from left to right, etc. I think it turned out pretty good for a first time use. I can't wait to do the next one for my second son when he gets his Eagle Scout award and then the same for my third son.

We finally finished the slide show and burned it to a dvd. I wasn't happy with the quality of the show when I viewed it on my pc monitor. But, when we stuck it in our regular dvd player and watched it on our tv - WOW! It was fantastic! Everything flowed smoothly and the picture quality was awesome - even the scanned photos. Thanks to all for your suggestions and help with this.

Be sure to re-burn two copies of the DVD to a GOLD Archival DVD. It will last longer and you will have an extra backup to put outside your house.

I don't have any of the archival DVD's. I'll be sure to make plenty of copies on those for family and for us. Thanks for that tip.
