My daughter has been asked to babysit twin 4 1/2 year olds. What is the going rate these days?

My 14-year old daughter babysits and normally receives $10 per hour. It seems to be the norm among her friends.

Thanks, my daughter is 17 year old and she'll be driving to Frisco... We just had no idea what the going would be.

I remember when my boys were toddlers and we paid a babysitter $5 an hour for all three of them. And, remember when we earned 50 cents to $1 an hour for babysitting when we were kids? It sure seems that the going rate has increased considerably in the last 10 years compared to the 20 years before that. I'm glad I don't have to hire babysitters anymore, but my two older boys are at the age where they could babysit if they wanted to.

$10 an hour is more than minimum wage.

The last time we paid an evening babysitter was 3 years ago - then the going rate was 7 to 8 per hour. During the summer months I've been lucky enough to get a friend's teenage son to cart my 2 kids to/from all their activities and pay 75 a week for this - I would actually pay more, but his parents said that was plenty!

My two oldest boys are going to babysit the neighbors younger boys - 3 of them. It will take the two of them to keep up with these three boys. She said she will pay $10 an hour since it is the two of them and they can split it. I thought that was very reasonable for the two of them to watch their boys. I really think inflation for babysitting has increased a lot more than inflation in general. When I used to babysit when I was in middle school back in the late 70's, I remember only charging 50 cents an hour for one baby - $1 an hour if there were more kids.

We pay $10 an hour, which I think is really good, considering I have no idea whether it will ever be claimed on taxes. And on top of that, the baby sitting usually takes place in the evening, which means, they are probably watching the kid for a few hours before they go to sleep, and then the rest of the time is spent watching TV, texting, surfing the web, etc.
