Marion Elementary now has the LARGEST student enrollment (864 kids) out of all the elementary schools. It also has more kids than Curtis Middle School!!!
The traffic when dropping off and picking up your kids in HORRIBLE. When is the school district going to do something about the amount of kids at this school?
Traffic is horrible. Classroom sizes are ridiculous and you can thank the Lost Creek HOA for all of this!

Traffic has always been a problem at Marion. Since they use the best drop off area for the buses, it will continue to be a problem. The classroom sizes are mandated by the state - you will not see any class sizes over the cap. Have you taken your concerns to Mrs. Walker? She would be the one to address them I would think. Good luck.

Is this your first year at Marion? I agree that the traffic is really bad, but it tends to get better after school has been in session for a while. It does seem particularly bad this year, though. We have fewer kids at Marion this year than we did a couple of years ago. I know it's not a popular opinion, but the LCR HOA did not determine the attendance zone. There were issues with all of the options. This is our 8th year at Marion, been there since it opened, and there have been several different traffic patterns over the years. They have had the city traffic planners there several times and this seems to be the best they have come up with. I don't think the entrances to the school were well planned out, but there's not much to be done about that now. The classroom size is mandated by the state, and you'll find similar sizes in most of the other schools.

Just for clarification, classroom sizes are mandated by the sate for K-4. There is no mandate for 5th and 6th grade. In my experience the district won't go over about 28 in those grades but they theoretically could.

Traffic? I remember watching the attendance boundary meeting when numerous LCR families claimed their kids either walked or rode bicycles to school? Where are those kids now?

They're not at Olsen, that's for sure. Does anyone even go to Olsen, or is it pretty much empty?

Well, it was raining a few days this week. I think we can give them a break for not walking.

There are a HUGE number of walkers at Marion. But there are also a huge number of K-2 students. As a parent of one of those, I'm not letting my child walk to and from school by himself. We have a new system where he walks part of the way and meets us...and we drop him off part of the way in the morning. It's a good way to get him "ready" for full walking. As safe as I feel our neighborhood is, I am just not ready for him to walk alone. In a group with others (including a few older kids), I'd be fine with it.
There are also a lot of "walking" parents who walk up to school to get their kids toting strollers, wagons (with smaller siblings) and other things like that. As wonderful and necessary as I think that is (for the safety of the toddlers), it clogs up the traffic around the school really badly. The traffic areas and sidewalks around the school were not created to accommodate several 2x2 strollers...My mom used to be an Elementary Principal and she was very surprised when she saw the school area outside and how little "open space" there was and how small the sidewalks were.
Then, the parents stand there waiting for the kids to get out...blocking the sidewalks. Last year, I saw many children have to walk into the traffic area off the curb to go around this.
They have made some changes this year, which is wonderful. But we still opted to have our child walk part of the way every day. It has made everything easier (even in the bad rain we just had...he had boots, rain jacket and umbrella and had a blast!) and it's helping build his independence...
