I frequent the Santa Barbara area a few times a year for business reasons. I've tried In-N-Out a few times. I've also tried Carl's Jr.
IMHO, a burger should be thick with all the fixin's and also nice and greasy. From what I remember, In-N-Out burgers are tiny which is why you gotta get the double/double. Otherwise, you're eating a burger the size of a happy meal. Carl's burgers are larger, juicier and have more taste. I stick with Carl's when I'm out there and hankerin' for a burger.
In-N-Out burgers will be a fad just like Krispycreme. Eventually, you'll go back to what you love. In my case, it's Whataburger all the way.
Hope you enjoy the In-N-Out when it opens but I won't be shocked when the doors close in a year or two.
While all of you are waiting in long lines, I'll be enjoying a bacon whataburger with cheese. Mmmm, I'm getting hungry!
