I have seen way too many kids driving cars at AHS with (parents too):

1. Bald tires - you might make it through the summer running thin treads, but the winter will cause the car to slip all over the place. New tires are cheaper than a wreck or worse.

2. Low Air Pressure - Cold weather = lower air pressures in the tire. Pump those babies up. It will improve the safety of the tire, improve the tire's longevity and gas milage to boot.

Good advice. This is usually the time of year when I notice that I need to air up my tires. I guess I should get out and do that soon - It will give me a chance to test out the built in air pump in the minivan I recently bought!

Just bought a new set for the boy's car.

The old ones had plenty of tread left, but they were older tires and were hard as a rock. I just didn't trust them.

My husband and I both are in the habit of checking all our car tiresdaily.
And by the way, if you need to put air in them, Quick Trip down by SAMS on Spring Creek has air for free.

About the only one I check daily is around my waist.

I've got a Craftsman upright compressor.

He's about to learn the fine art of tire rotation on his car.

Tire rotation can be a little tough with nothing but a in car jack. I have a bunch of floor jacks and I still have a tire shop do it.

I'm getting old.

I am surprised they don't get tickets. my son's first car was a '72 Charger and he got a ticket for bald/slick tires. The not so funny part is that after school he worked for discount tire at the time. (he was 16/17) He got new tires and I had to go with him to the police station to show them the tires and the ticket was dismissed. That hot rod was an attention getter for sure so he sold it and bought a Mustang 5.0 I am so happy he outgrew the need for speed. He is a Ferrier now so he drives a Dodge Diesel with the two big rear tires (I forget what they are called) Those tires are EXPENSIVE so he keeps them in good shape.

Here in North Texas, you can get away with running low or no tire tread since we get rain in bunches and if you can avoid those assive downpours, the roads are pretty dry, mostly concrete and tread really does not play a big part.

Now, in the winter when we get our first frozen precip and the rubber tread compounds are harder from the cold, your suddenly tame car or truck becomes an ice skating squirrel and you lose your ability to accelerate, stop and turn.

Fun for those of us who grew up fish tailing the car all day, but downright scary for young N. Texas drivers who don't get much snow and ice time.

Let's keep it safe on the streets and reckless at the track!

CC,

I didn't realize there were that many horses still around but, my son stays real busy. Most of his business is right here in Collin County.

Anyway, his TIRES get a workout.

That gave me a giggle...but it's true, most North Texas kids don't know how to drive in the icy/snowy stuff. Case in point, my first year away at college (Central Texas) there was a big snow storm that shut down the campus. Of course I took the opportunity to come home, ended up backwards on an I35 cloverleaf...not fun, but I learned what NOT to do!

Although I admit I had no idea what condition my tires were in at the time...other than round.
