Are backpacks used/allowed in our districts middle schools? My oldest child will begin middle school in the district next school year.

At Ford, my daughter has a backpack she takes to school but they have lockers so they don't allow backpacks during the day. However, it may change next year as I have heard they won't have lockers next year. Call the school to confirm. At Lowery, they do allow backpacks (not wheeled ones) and they carry their things with them- no lockers. If they don't have lockers, they generally have a class set of books in each room and they send a set home with the kids so they aren't hauling books everywhere.

None of the middle schools will be using lockers next year. My recommendation is to get a zippered binder with file folder dividers for each subject. I definitely wouldn't get a wheeled backpack the halls and really crowded and there won't be anyplace to put it. I've heard rumors that they are going to encourage the kids to use the sling backpacks.

No lockers in middle schools next year. Students will be permitted to carry a backpack but they would like the kids to limit themselves to 3-inches or less worth of binders, etc. I believe there will indeed be home sets and classroom sets of textbooks so those aren't carried back and forth.

I know this past year at CMS my 7th grader was told not to use a full size backpack but to use the athletic style. (the drawstring type of backpack)
This is the first I have heard that there will not be lockers. I can't imagine having to lug everything around class to class.

I don't understand the reason for not using the lockers - if they are there, why not?

They might have too many kids, not enough lockers. Not sure.

The reason we parents were given for the change was to ease the time crunch when changing classes -- no lockers means no stops at lockers, means no dawdling, means no tardies. When I was a middle-schooler -- back during ancient times when we kept our stone tablets and chisels in lockers -- we seemed to manage okay...

There actually are lots of reasons. It is a logistical nightmare to get them assigned and the combinations changed every summer. They often break or the locks jam or kids forget their combination. Kids put stuff in there that they shouldn't. There are probably others but those are the ones I heard. They assign a set of textbooks for the kids to keep at home and they assign band lockers or gym lockets. They are just carrying their notebooks and their lunch. It really isn't bad.

Have you seen my child's notebook that he uses for 6th grade? lol Unless we can figure out how to seriously streamline his stuff, there is no way he can use a tiny backpack. He's also a huge packrat with his backpack, so that doesn't help.

Maybe it is getting them ready for the LHS and AHS - since there is no lockers there.
I remember when I was in school, one time I was going to this 3 story school and my locker was on the 3rd floor - you would have to run to the 3rd floor get what you needed and then run to your class - it was a bugger if you forgot something for a class that was on the 1st floor.
When my son was a Curtis we would take his schedule and work on a locker times between classes and work on what to get during those times. It seemed to work - from what he said.

Good to know, especially since the kids have such a hard time getting those lockers to unlock.
