There's not any. Get Mexican food instead.

Try Lockhart Smokehouse in Dallas.

Anything closer is probably not worth the money spent on it.

Big Ray's in Allen is OK.

Better:
Lockhart smokehouse
David's in Arlington (Pantego)
Instead of trying to convince the other side they are wrong, why don't we come together to fix the things we all agree are wrong. We waste too much time and energy arguing when we should be united.

For some reason everyone thinks it's cool to be a BBQ snob.

Honestly if you go anywhere but Dickies you'll be fine. I had my Mom's bday party not long ago and used Red Hot and Blue. They did a fantastic job. I have yet to get over to Ray's, but other places around here would be Rudys and Randy Whites.

Raider18, I don't consider it cool; it just the difference between good food and bad. Obviously, I disagree with your "anywhere but Dickey's" comment, but to each his/her own. :)

My personal answer to the OP's question (note that these are NOT inclusive of Ft. Worth places; there are some top tier places there, but I have not been personally, so I can't name them here):

Top tier:

Lockhart Smokehouse
Pecan Lodge (if they've got their smoker issues resolved)
Hard Eight
Eddie Deen's Crossroads
Big Al's Smokehouse

Next best:

Baker's Ribs (Deep Ellum)
Hutchins BBQ (McKinney)
Baby Back Shak
Meshack's (Garland)

The rest:

Pick a different cuisine. :)

If you want to knock their socks off, take them to Austin and go to Franklin BBQ. You won't be sorry (unless they've run out by the time you get there).

Seriously, though, if I had to take folks who aren't familiar with Texas BBQ, but want really good stuff, it'd have to be one of the top tier places. If they're just casual diners, Hutchins would be a great choice if you wanted to stay close to Allen.

Again, my personal and fairly experienced opinion. :)

We're hosting a family gathering in two weeks and are using Big Rays. Great bbq, very good prices and supporting a local family owned business.

I told you the BBQ experts would be on a roll. I think the Dickeys at Hwy 121 is good.
Believe me I know BBQ as well anyone of these guys. Used to go to Buddy Meyers in Elgin back when the sausage was called hot guts. Paper on the table, brisket, sausage, pickles and onions on the table.

Yes BBQ in Lockhart (the city, not Smokehouse as I've never been there) is out of the world compared to what we have here. But I think Rudy's BBQ is pretty good. There's one in Frisco so it's not far from Allen.

Visited Hard Eight yesterday for the first time and I think it's among the best in the metroplex.

I'm not big on any BBQ (have yet to find better than you get at the Galveston County Fair cookoff!) but I know several people that were elated when Rudy's came to Allen. I do like their jalapeno sausage!

The best I've had outside of a cookoff was in Memphis TN @ Charles Vergos' Rendezvous, it's quite an experience - and they ship ;)

While famous for their ribs, I prefer the pork shoulder.

Best I've had is Lostyankee's Smoke Pit... brisket on the smoker as we speak...
