I have encountered a situation several times now and wonder what you all think.
I walk our dog every morning just as the sun comes up. At a house on a corner, there is always a truck parked out front and as we walk by, a small-medium size dog pops up in the front seat of the cab. The windows are cracked so it gets air. But I have wondered if this is a very ideal situation for over night conditions for this dog. It doesn't seem to be panting or distressed so I have just thought that it's ok. I guess it is similar to people going camping with their pets overnight, but at least those pets aren't alone in the heat.
I haven't reported this as I think I should mind my own business but I would feel guilty if I ever found out something happened to the dog because of my inaction. Any opinions for me?

Have you ever watched to see how late in the day the dog is in the truck by itself? It heats up pretty quick after sun up. And what if they forget about the dog for just one day, I would get involved.

I only walk by it in the early a.m. so I don't know how long it is there or when they get the dog out.
I'll try to go out in a little while here and see if it is there. It is still 95 degrees outside at 9:20 p.m.
So what do you think......animal control or the non-emergency police number?

If it was still in there when it was that hot, I'd call animal control. In a situation like that, they will be out there pretty fast. Even with the windows cracked, it is still a whole lot hotter inside a vehicle than outside. I hope the dog is okay. I would question why someone is leaving their pet in a vehicle overnight anyway.

My husband and I walked by about 9:30 last night and the truck wasn't there. We went for a walk this morning about 6:00 a.m. and no one was there. Maybe they are gone for the long weekend.
The truck did have 2 side windows painted that said, "New baby boy" or something similar so maybe they are keeping the dog in the truck because of a new born. I think if that is the case, they had 9 months to figure this out before the baby was born but this is all my speculation.
I will keep an eye on it and call animal control if I see it again. Thanks for your thoughts, just didn't want to be a nosey neighbor but I care more about the animal that may be in jeopardy.

Why are people so paranoid about keeping their dogs when they have a new baby?! I have heard about this many times when people have a baby, they get rid of the dog or cat. It is a shame because new research has shown that those kids who grow up with pets develop better immunities and have less allergies. They also learn to be a more caring and nurturing person when they learn to be kind and care for a pet. It wouldn't surprise me if we see a picture of that dog up for adoption at the Allen Animal Shelter or SPCA of Texas.

Depends on the dog - Some dogs are very maternal and fantastic around kids.
Other dogs are spoiled little brats and the newborn is gonna rain on their parade.
The there is the diaper and treat training.
Also, with some breeds, a baby crying can trigger an attack instinct. It is rare, but it does happen.
We have alsways kept our dogs around the newborns and dog quickly accepts the newborn into the "pack". However we make a point to play with the dog as much as the baby.
