I don't recall receiving any info about this from Allen ISD but as of this new school year, they're moving from a 6-week grading period to 9 weeks.
Not sure why. I don't see any explanation on the Allen ISD website. I don't have a problem with it but would like to know why.
Anyone know???

I hadn't heard but I know McKinney ISD has been doing it for awhile.

I had heard about this around February. Not sure as to the reasoning - but I have always thought that 6 weeks was too short. By the time parents receive a progress report there was very little time to recover if there happened to be a bad grade. And my pocketbook will be a little better off. Paying for grades every 9 weeks will be welcomed.

I've heard it also gives more time for learning, less time spent on preparing for 6 weeks tests and such for the older kids.

It will also change when kids first become ineligible to participate in fall sports and Band. I'm not saying that's a motivation, just thinking ahead. Some kids start out each year on the slow side while they get used to new teachers. This will probably benefit them.

I think it will be a good change especially considering that some of the "6 week" grading periods were really only 5 week periods. The new system will give kids more time to recover if they fall off a little bit before the progress reports come out.

That was my incoming 9th grader's thought when I told him of the change. He's pleased.
The question is, with the middle of 9 weeks being 4 1/2, do we get the report at the end of the 4th week or the beginning of the 5th? I've experienced some laxity at the elementary level in getting them out at the end of 3 weeks, so that's a concern. A set time for parents to expect that progress report would be nice.

Problem is -- it looks like there are not going to be progress reports unless a child is failing??
