when we had our house built 20 years ago, we had to have that ugly air trap thing put on by the kitchen faucet. It is just a round silver thing that collects grime and is used for the dishwasher drainage in case of an overflow. There are workarounds to not having this. I have been hearing conflicting stories about whether this is required anymore. Does anyone not have the air trap on their kitchen sink?

Yahoo Answer "Air gaps are not required if you loop your dishwasher drain hose to the uppermost point in cabinet and secure it. This keeps the top of the loop above the flood rim. The drain hose should be connected to the disposal."
This loop keeps any discharge from your diswasher from running back into the dishwasher and assures it will drain through your disposal. If you're getting a new sink, just don't have a hole re-drilled. If you're keeping your existing sink, some add a spray nozzle in that location or there are probably various plugs available to snap into the hole.
If there are any plumbers out there who have a different opinion, please feel free to jump in.
I just thought someone should answer kt436.
