As a licensed A/C guy, I'll offer a few comments:

1) Systems that are sized properly for our normal summer climate may be and in most cases are undersized for the extreme, extended high ambient temperatures that we're experiencing.

2) Make sure that before you have someone assess your heat load and cooling requirements that you have your system properly serviced - this should ALWAYS include a thorough flushing of the outdoor condensing coil. Most Trane units and many of the older style Rheem units are particularly prone to a relatively rapid clogging of dirt and debris and need a cleaning twice in one season. But all outdoor units should be flushed at least once a year (spring time) to ensure maximum airflow and heat transfer. In addition, these extreme temps we're experiencing cause unusually high run times which causes the coil to become dirty and restricted over shorter periods.

3) Again, with the long run/cycle times that will come with this extreme heat, change your indoor air filter more often than normal. A good rule of thumb is once a month. If you have hardwood or tile floors, and pets, high traffic, or any combination of these it may need it even more often.

I know for a fact that the heating & cooling outfits that advertise here on Allen Online are generally reputable and trustworthy - I have heard many good things about all of them. So I encourage you to check with one of them for your A/C needs. I do not represent any of them but would be happy to answer any questions privately if necessary. (webmaster - please speak up if I have over stepped my bounds here).

I just used Lucas Heating & A/C from the recommendations on this site and they were on time and did a great job. I had a heat pump that wouldn't turn on and it turned out to be a couple of bad wires going to the thermostat. He was in and out in less than an hour. I would recommend these guys to anyone.
