This is something near and dear to my heart. We adopted an amazing Greyhound last April from the Greyhound Adoption League of Texas or G.A.L.T for short. They rescue Greyhounds from various tracks or round them up when they are dumped out into a field or wooded area. They take them to special kennels for medical issues and vaccinate them. Some are in horrible shape with either having their tails cut off or an ear missing or being very thin. People take them into their homes as foster dogs and then take them to various pet stores, bookstores, etc. on weekends to meet people and answer questions about the dogs. They have seized dogs twice from a man in Fort Worth who has exposed them to Sevin. Some had to be put to sleep. The last seizure was a mother and her seven puppies. The mother was in horrible shape and is still being medically treated. All the puppies were helped back to good health and adopted.
I am hoping this link will go through as it is yet another seizure as these 11 greys were found abandoned in a trailer and were there for about 40 hours. They are being treated at Houn House right now and will be available to adopt soon.
The motto of the league is "No Grey Turned Away" and right now there is a waiting list to get the dogs even into a kennel let alone adopted.
Being a foster family for a grey is really cool. All you have to do is love them and give them a good temporary home. The vet fees are waived, the dogs are spayed/neutered for free and your only expense is the food, bed, leash, and toys. Alot of times foster families fall in love with their grey and adopt them. There is a sliding fee scale depending on the age of the grey.
If this link doesn't work, you can go to: www.greyhoundadoptiontx.org. Just check it out and you can see all the dogs waiting for their forever homes. Also you can read the article about the 11 greys just rescued.
And if you are interested in learning more about them, there is a list of "meet and greets" where foster families will be the next few weekends so you can meet the dogs and find out more.
Yes, there are thousands of animals that need adopting but these dogs were born into a life of abuse and mistreatment at the track and then let go to fend for themselves. They are so gentle and docile and if you check out their pictures, no two ever really look alike like most breeds. Truly an interesting animal.

I do hope they find homes for these dogs. Every greyhound I have been around seems to be a very calm and loving dog. If we didn't already have four critters (other than my boys) running around the house, I would consider getting one. Hopefully they are all in new homes by now since when reports like this hit the news, people come out of the woodwork to adopt.
