I am trying something new this year using compost instead of mulch in landscaping beds. I am using between 3-6 inches of compost in the beds but away from the base of the landscaping plants.
So far it has been great. The compost is supressing weed growth and those weeds that do come in are easily removed in the soft compost. The landscaping plants have responded favorably to the initiall warmer soil and increased nitrogen from the decomposing compost. The compost has held up well to the high winds and looks great with it's deep black color. I picked up the 7 yards of compost from Plano pure during their february compost sale. I also like the ability to use the extra compost in the lawn and garden. It is really a very versitile material.

Yes, it is good to use everywhere in the landscape and will help feed the soil and retain moisture and give off nutrients.

And, just curious, how in the world did you transport and store 7 yards of material? haha

Sounds like he made several trips to Texas Pure or had them delivered. That is a lot of work, but not anymore than buying the mulch in bulk.

Buy in Bulk + $40 for delivery. I am also using a thinner layer of about 1" in the lawn where there is bare spots or damage from last year's drought.

Great idea using it in the lawn. Your lawn will be very happy with the addition of the compost. It will be greener and the compost will help retain moisture for the lawn to help it make it through drought conditions.
