What do y'all think about the Molsen farm project? Excited about it? Not interested? Good idea? Waste of money? Cant wait to move forward?
I'm trying to judge sentiment.

Only saw a brief piece on it. Depends, for me, on who is involved? These things can be developer driven or have a blend of influence from community, which is best. But interesting in any case.

I've always loved this kind of co-op. I am wondering about their interpretation of sustainable agriculture. Monsanto uses that same term for their genetically altered crops and petrochemical pesticides and fertilizers. I'd really hate to see that kind of influence on such a project. I'd much prefer an entirely organic sustainable experience to prove nature has a way to provide all that is needed.

Tim Dentler talked to the Allen Garden Club about this project and it was my understanding that they are still looking at other options from the private sector - not necessarily going to go with the consultants mentioned in the article - nothing in writing there - just talking. I think they were talking more about research in organic gardening.
I think it will be a good addition to Allen since in some ways, it will be similar to the Heritage Farmstead in Plano where people can learn about farming in Allen. But, it is so much more than that. They are supposed to build the environmental education center there and will also have areas for day camps and overnight camping. Community gardens will be a nice feature there too. The city's tree farm is already there. They can't do much until the project is fully funded, so until the economy gets better, it is still a waiting game. I have been waiting for the past five or so years since the garden club has agreed to put in a children's garden adjacent to the environmental education center. This park will be like no other park in Allen - very unique and educationally based.

I'm pretty excited about it myself, but a little cautious. How much will it cost the taxpayers? (they have goals of generating money) How will they decide what to do? Will those choices be good for most, or only represent a few?

Part of the funding is already covered by bonds voted on in the last few years by Allen residents. The remainder of the funding - they're looking to the private sector for that. They developed a master plan about four or five years ago and they will not develop the park until it is completely funded. Unfortunately, with the poor economy in the last few years, they will not sell the bonds until the economy is better. Even with that, they still need private sector funding. I don't think anymore of the funding will be from property tax dollars since the bonds were already purchased.
There is also the .5 cent from sales tax that is used to fund projects such as this. I'm sure part of the funding is coming from that too. So, if we can keep events such as the recent basketball playoffs, arena football, concerts, etc. going at the event center, and businesses in Allen having conferences at hotels, etc. - all the people attending those events spend their money here in Allen which contributes to that sales tax.
You can always send Tim Dentler an e-mail or call him if you want specific questions about the funding of the park answered. He is pretty good at returning e-mails. - [email protected]

I'd like to see the project take 'zero' sales tax and 'zero' tax dollars. (that is my goal at least) I sat down and talked to Tim last week about it. He is very nice and answered my questions.
Denise, I sat next to your husband at a meeting Monday night!

I'm glad Tim was able to answer your questions. He is a good person.
Yes, my husband told me he saw you and he also saw another person we know. Off topic - if anyone is interested in what meeting . . . It is for Citizens On Patrol.
