There is a dog with special needs at the Animal Shelter that needs a forever home very soon. Her name is Precious. She is a medium sized dog who has been there since late November. She was surrendered from her previous owner due to abuse/neglect. The staff at the Allen Animal Shelter have a soft spot for her because she is a very sweet dog. It turns out that Precious is heartworm positive and is in need of treatment. She has been on a heartworm preventative, but that hasn't helped. They are looking for someone who is willing to give her a forever home, however long that will be, and the Allen Animal Shelter will assist with the cost of the treatment. They are working with Dr. Coffman at the Allen Veterinary Hospital and may go ahead and get her spayed at their cost if that will help get her adopted. She has been caged for too long (showing some signs of depression) and needs a yard where she can run and play (after her heartworm treatment is complete) and be with a family. She loves to play fetch, loves her treats and would love to go for a walk with you. Please contact the staff at the Allen Animal Shelter if you are interested in giving Precious her forever home. Currently, there is no picture posted of Precious, so you would need to go to the Shelter to visit her. Don't wait too long. They are going to make a decision by next Friday.

She's not showing up on the Petfinder listing. Has she already been adopted, or is my link just acting up?
Never mind, I just read the end of your post where you said there's no photo of her on the site!

That's okay. It was a long post. Hopefully, this will help her find a good home. I'm not sure what kind of a mix dog she is, but she is about knee-high to me (I'm just over 5'6") and might have some lab and terrier in her? Her coat is kind of a brown/orange. When I saw her today, I gave her a treat from the shelter's treat jar and she seemed pretty happy with that! Her ears really perked up.

I was at the shelter last week taking care of some pet registrations and asked about Precious. She is undergoing heartworm treatment and when she is better, she will be ready for a new home!

Well, can you believe that Precious still hasn't been adopted? Her last test for heartworms came out negative! She is doing great! She has been at the Allen Animal Shelter for a year and a half. She absolutely loves the kids who sometimes argue over who gets to take her out to the yard to play with her. She also thinks all the tennis balls are hers and they will find up to ten balls back in her kennel because she brings them back inside with her. Yes, she still thinks she has to defend her kennel with a little bit of a growl or bark, but she really is a sweet dog. She needs a special family who will have patience with her as she adjusts to a normal home environment. Please give this sweet dog a chance and take her out to play so you can get to know her personality better. She just needs a chance to be the best dog she can be with a family in a real home that is not surrounded by steel fencing. http://www.petfinder.com/petdetail/25073566

Gosh Denise, that is awful! Do you think the reason she hasn't been adopted is because she was heartworm positive? Hopefully now that she has clear results someone will take her home. We will be looking for a second dog soon but have a vacation planned next month and want to wait. By the way, how does she get along with other dogs?

I shared this info on my fb as well as on my neighborhood fb page. It might help if they updated her info on Petfinder to say that she has undergone treatment and is now negative. I hope to go by the shelter tomorrow to register our dog, so I will ask them about it. If my lab puppy was a little older, I'd consider taking her. He's quite a handful on his own right now.

I would think the fact that she originally had heart worms kept her from getting adopted. As far as getting along with other dogs, I think it would be best to ask the staff at the shelter. Yes, I agree they need to update her profile. I'll send them an e-mail.

Hopefully there will be good news for Precious today. I was at the shelter renewing our registration and overheard the office people talking about updating Precious' profile. Then someone said they had a family from Frisco coming in today to met her. I checked Petfinders before posting this and her profile I think has been changed. It does say she is heartworm negative now. So let's keep our fingers crossed!

I was just at the shelter on Friday and Precious has been adopted. One of the young ladies that works at Allen animal shelter approved herself for the adoption! Ya for Precious! She couldn't be happier! Wishing them years of happiness.

Yes, I work with her mom and she said Precious is very happy in her new home. She even has another dog as a playmate - and they play and play and play in their backyard until they just lay down exhausted.
