If the federal government was following your every move on the internet the way corporate America is doing today, there would be lawsuits from California to New York, well unless it’s part of the Patriot Act surveillance. I have heard this "tracking" called 21st century stalking. Imagine if someone followed you from store to store, or to PTA meetings, or followed your kids to their friends house. Tracking is really not any different.

How much are you, and your children, being tracked online and what can you do about it?

First, see how much you are being tracked.
The web browser Firefox has just released a tool called Collusion that tracks the people tracking you. It is a Firefox add-on and can only be used with Firefox.

With this tool you can see how many companies are following your every move.
The CEO of Firefox demonstrates Collusion in this video “Tracking the Tracker”

Next Stop the tracking
1. Opting out … while Opting out cannot stop all tracking it can prevent a lot of data colletion.
* At NAI This is the Network Advertising Initiative, where currently 80 advertisers are working together to let people opt out of the selective advertising.

2. Opt out and block trackers Privacy Choice This site includes an Opt out as well as a link to add a TrackerBlock to your browsers.

3. Clean all cookies before you leave the internet. You can do this manually or automatically in most browsers. This is better done with a Cookie Manager as many cookies are actually useful.

4. Use anything except Internet Explorer to browse the Web.
* Many hackers count on users using Internet Explorer. In hacking trials Chrome and Firefox were the hardest to hack. Also Chrome and Firefox have add-on’s that can manage cookies and trackers for you.

Finally, use a good anti-Virus software that also provides protection from SpyWare and Malware.

Tracking for the purposes of offering focused Advertising is okay, that is if you know about it and you can opt out when you want. Otherwise its just stalking. IMO
No matter how big and tough you think you are, when a toddler hands you their ringing toy phone... you answer it.
