1. When do the kids get their schedules?
2. Where do you find a school supply list?
3. What time do you recommend dropping of your kid?
4. Are there after school study groups?

Thanks for your help!

Oh, and what back packs do you recommend? We have no clue how many books will be carried around. We have a son starting in the fall.

1. Schedules are usually posted to Skyward not long before the beginning of school. There is usually an orientation a few days before school starts when your student can find classrooms and walk their schedule.

2. There will be a school supply list posted on the AISD website, but each teacher will probably also provide their own supply list. The fun part is consolidating the lists before braving a trip to Staples. :D

3. I always dropped off around 7:40. That's pretty early, but the traffic was always light at that time and my particular middle-schooler liked getting there early to socialize with friends and/or visit the math tutoring sessions.

4. sorry, don't know.

Our son was in 7th grade last year at Erickson. He only had to carry textbooks twice during the school year - to bring them home on the first day, and to take them back on the last day. All of the teachers had a classroom set of books, so the students keep their books at home for the year. That's not to say he didn't have a lot to carry around, because he did have to cart around notebooks, etc. Any of the normal book-bag type backpacks should be sufficient, but error on the larger end. They do not have lockers assigned to them, so they must carry everything with them through the day.

Which middle school? Curtis is having "Cougar Camp" the middle if August. It looks like you have to register your child for it. There is a supply fee as well as a few individual supplies needed; it's posted on the website. Check your school's web site, much of the info you want is already posted there. I usually drop off right after I drop off my younger kids at the elementary, so between 7:45-8:00.

If I had my choice the kids would be dropped off a few blocks from school and then they can walk the rest of the way. Car line is the death of society as we know it.

The schools typically have back to school nights the week before classes start when they can get their scheduled and meet their teachers. The schedules should be available on Skyward that week as well.

I typically dropped mine off right before class started but many others dropped them off around 8. They don't let them wander the halls if they are there early but they can go to tutoring or the library if they ask for a pass.

The teachers have before or after school tutoring times on different days. They will probably post a schedule on their websites.

They usually post a supply list but it's not like elementary school. Many teachers will have additional or different supplies for their classes. I would recommend getting the basics like paper, pens, pencils, etc. but wait until after class starts to get the rest.

They don't use lockers any more so keep in mind that they have to keep all their supplies, minus the textbooks, with them. My daughter used a zipper binder and a backpack which worked well for her. (They do have lockers for gym clothes and instruments.)

They probably won't allow a wheeled backpack and they'd never make it through the halls with one anyway. Some people recommend the string backpacks but mine always had way too much stuff for those. Mine just used the typical Jansport backpack.

My other advice would be to encourage the kids to get involved in activities and enjoy the experience. Both of my kids pretty much hated sixth grade but they loved middle school.

Thank you for the information. What is Skyward? Is this something I can use now?

Skyward is the district's online gradebook (among other things). It will let you view grades (and report cards), see attendance information, see when things are due if teachers put things in ahead of time. You can also receive/send messages from/to teachers through the system, although I have found that e-mail usually works better (or at least I'm more likely to get a quicker response if I just use e-mail).

Are you new to AISD? If you are, you probably won't be able to use Skyward until closer to school starting. It is also how they get the beginning of the year paperwork done.

As soon as the school offices return to campus, you should call your campus to see if you have already been set up. Most student accounts were set up while they were in sixth grade. You will be able to view their daily grades, missing homework assignments, opportunities to make up work, etc...you know, all those things your student won't tell you themself!

Curtis, definitely, and all MS campuses, I believe, have an after school homework club. It runs from 3:30-4:30, Monday-Thursday and does not meet on Friday.

It sounds like homework club is different at different schools. At Ford when my kids were there homework club was assigned for kids who didn't get something turned in and wasn't optional. They used to have another club that was optional. I'm not sure if they still have that. When they have the back to school night they should have information available.

Homework club at Ford can be required or voluntary if your student needs help. They just ask that they stay the whole time.

My son will be entering 7th grade in the fall of 2014 and we are building a home on west side zoned for Curtis. However, we already know several families from Ereckson and would like to at least try to get in there. Anyone know how stringent they are on transfers? I know much of it has to do with space available.

I don't want to be a Debbie Downer, but your chances are not good. Every request is considered on an individual basis. Unless you have a hardship of some kind, the transfer is not likely to be approved.

Curtis is a wonderful school. Don't let the fact that it is not on the west side of Allen cause you concern. My children attended Curtis. They loved it and did extremely well.

I spoke to the folks at AISD this past summer about a Curtis to Ereckson transfer. According to them the chances are practically zero.
YMMV.

If you do get a transfer, the transportation is on you.

Just remember, a big factor in your choosing Allen was probably the schools, ALL the schools. Your child can be successful anywhere. All our schools are great!

Yeah the only ones able to "choose" Ereckson over Curtis without being zoned for it this year were those that had been rezoned before 8th grade this summer. At least that I know of.
