Our 12 month old just turned the corner on the walking part. He now prefers to walk across the room (as much as he can without falling :-) than he does crawling.

What about the talking? He has a few words he uses, but I feel like he prefers not to talk. When do they start talking more? Just curious. I've been told to savor the silence, but I still can't wait!
Thanks!

Our son was a late talker. Not sure if it had anything to do with it, but we did "baby sign language" with him (ASL signs used with babies essentially) That worked great, but at 2 years he barely spoke. I read a book by Thomas Sowell, his child was the same way. Studies show late talkers are more intelligent if that's any comfort.
At about 2 1/2, we were driving here to DFW from up north as part of relocating and HE TALKED THE WHOLE WAY. "COW" "TREE" "CAR"

Guess just relax and keep talking with him. Reading to him as much as you can too...

Haha. How fun! I cna definitely see his intelligence and am not too worried about it... but VERY curious. You can see him working things out in his mind, but he just doesn't talk a lot about it.

Looking forward to more words, but he's fun the way he is. :-)
Thanks!

The real question is does he text? Kids do not really talk much anymore.

Enjoy this stage. It is a rare moment.

Does he understand you? Does he try to communicate with you?

I taught my baby a few signs, and he uses them often! He also has a few sounds that he uses to mean specific things - for example, he uses a "brrrmmm-brrrrmmm" noise to mean anything with wheels (esp cars). And he barks when he sees a dog or a cat, LOL.

Try not to worry. I'm sure your baby is doing what he's supposed to be doing. He's probably just working on another skill right now, like walking!

When they have something to say.

Honestly, if you are extremely attentive to non-verbal communication it can delay the onset of verbal communication. Are you doing sign language with the little one?? Just keep talking to the little rug rat and eventually you will hear your first "NOOOOOOOoooo!!!!"

One the Noooo begins, it does not stop for 21 years.

A few words is right on track. The number of words should continue to grow until he is making simple 2-word sentences this year and he should become easier to understand. Like the PP said, if he has a need to talk, he probably will, so you can encourage that.
