Our daughter just moved into a college apartment and is in need of internet service only. She called Verizon and was told that to have internet service, you also had to have a land line. She doesn't need a land line. She has had issues with AT&T and their service but that could still be a possibility.
So my question is, those of you who don't have land lines any more, how do you connect to the internet?.
This stuff is absolutely not my cup of tea so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
I tried to find a topic here where this had been discussed before but didn't see anything similar.

I would think that most cellular companies offer MiFi. It doesn't take a land line, it is a wireless system that can be used where there is cell service. ATT, Sprint and Verizon should all offer this service.

It may be based on where you live, but my mother-in-law lives in Plano and has Verizon, Internet Only. No phone or cable service. I suggest calling again, but maybe to a different number.

All Internet service providers have basically the same back end technology. I'd call AT&T and Verizon for the best rate and go with whichever one has the best price for speed. Individual installations can have issues in any region and I wouldn't get hung up on whether AT&T was a problem somewhere else. As for the needing a landline, that needs to be escalated to a manager in their call center because that is no longer the standard. Better yet, have dad call rather than having a naive sounding girl on the line. I wouldn't put it past any of these companies to use that line until pressed.

I know with ATT, you don't need a landline for dsl anymore. I called a couple months ago and had them cancel my landline since I don't even own a home phone, and actually got a new customer rate of 19.99/month

You do not have to have a phone lie for Verizon High Speed Internet. It isn't called DSL anymore. I work there, I know. If the Rep tells you that you do ask why specifically.

I have AT&T land line with DSL Elite (6 MB/sec) for internet. When I called to cancel my land line, I was told that without a phone line my internet speed would only be guaranteed for DSL Pro (3 MB/sec) speed. Sounds like a sham to me.

We decided not to look into Verizon. The website was a little confusing. It said it was $19.99 for the internet and a land line was needed just like the guy told my daughter. So if you go ahead and get the land line that you will never use wouldn't you have to pay the monthly service charge and all those little taxes they add on? So the $19.99 for internet is actually false. Unless I'm thinking wrong. I am not a very "technical" person but this seems like a step backward with all the new cell phones coming out.

Sorry about that. I learned that policy changed and Verizon does require phone service for high speed internet (not talking FIOS - that requires that you have fiber available to your location).

Do you know why they made this policy change and do they charge the monthly fee etc. for the land line? If these charges are added on then they should state that somewhere unless I didn't read it right.

First, you didn't say where the college is so that will depend upon service.
Verizon's site says $19.99 with home phone service, which means all the little taxes and fees. This is only 0.5-1.0 Mbps but don't know if download (probably) or upload. This seems slow. Next is $29.99 with 1.1-15 Mbps.
AT&T is about the same.
Earthlink had without phone but they didn't look any better.
I'd check Wifi but it may not go everywhere needed so like cell phone need to check coverage.

From a technical standpoint DSL requires a land line. That does not mean they necessarily
have to charge a separate fee for it.

She is at UNT. And yes, I was wondering about the monthly service charge for having a land line plus all the little taxes and fees. It just seems like wasting money on something she will never use. She chose Charter which I have never heard of. It's $29.99 per month for 1 year. Seems to be working fine.
